Last week I asked about the progress of my M14 order. They said they were working hard to get them all shipped.

Mine arrived two days ago. Receiver stamped 2007 I assume year of manufacture? Seril number is strange. 001270 Seems kinda low?

When I opened the box I found the wood covered in white fuzz. Mold, I assume.

I took the action out of the stock and washed stock with hot water and Gojo hand cleaner and a plastic scrub pad. It cleaned up easily, Wood seems lighter now. I think there was dirt on the stock.

Then I washed the stock with Javex bleach to kill the mold. Will go to Lee Valley and get some nice oil finish to seal up the wood.

The action and trigger were sprayed with break cleaner and wiped off with a paper towel. The action was not coated with cosmoline, but what looks like a medium weight oil. Then I re-sprayed with Break Free.

The trigger is just about perfect. A two-stage trigger with a crisp 4 pound weight. I would not touch it.

Here are some pictures. I don't know what variations there are, good or bad, in the possibilities of the rifle. I look forward to bedding it and taking it to the M14 clinic in Barrie in three weeks.

I am very pleased. Hope it shoots...

Got mine yesterday. Very nice rifles! The white stuff on the stock looked like some kind of grease or wax to me though... Was yours actually fuzzy?

Ganderite: I know wayyyyy deep in my heart, that you can make that baby shoot dimes! Once we get you down that accurizing road at the Barrie clinic, you are gonna rock our world! :D

I notice that your flash suppressor is welded on by the highly detailed pictures you have posted.

Cheers,
Barney

that white stuff covering the stock is definitely fuzzy which means it is mold. There is another threat about it but I took the trigger assembly out and inside there was quite a build up of fuzzy white stuff. I am going to soal the stock in bleach for a while. That should kill the mold.

Hungry, is this absolutely necessary to replace the stock that came from China with another stock? I read elsewhere on CGN that the Chinese stock is very soft wood which may either distort due to moisture or change shape because of recoil applied to housing holding the receiver, which in both cases can be dangerous. I want to keep my extra expedinture to an absolute minimum.
I am a proud new owner of Norinco M14 for the past 2 days.

Just to the right of where the bayonet lug is supposed to be you will see a circle in the parkerizing.Thats where the welds are.

Your sig says it all.... lucky bastard!

..."suppressed".

i thought all the norc FH's were welded on.. are yours not usually ? you lucky bas.. well you know what i was gonna say :D

all of ours have 3 spot welds , we usually have to cut off that ring at the rear if we want to remove the sights

Here's mine. An interesting thing happened: I was showing off my M14 to some friends so I cycled the action several times and as I was doing it, the bold came loose and fell out of the receiver!!!! I told them, "ahh, yeah, it was supposed to happen".....but that is worrisome! How can the bolt come out without disassembling the gun in the first place. Should this be possible happen at all? Is this a case of ill fitting parts where some parts have incorrect dimentions?

Ummm, wow. Not supposed to happen. The bolt came out, or the whole bolt carrier? Is anything broken or cracked?

The Operating Rod came loose right and disconnected from the Bolt roller, right? Yes these things happen. There are a couple of explanations. First is you were likely pulling the handle out away from the receiver, and because of a second rather typical Norinco problem, the handle came off. This second problem is the Operating Rod Guide on the barrel is invariably loose. Pull on the Operating Rod, the Rod Guide turns to the right and the little nubbins on the Operating Rod comes out of its little track on the receiver. The solution is to re-pin the Rod Guide so it won't turn. Go read the Sticky's on how to do that.

Actually, the op rod stayed in place and it seems rather solidly locked in its track, there is little lateral movement when you tag on it. As I cycled the action few times, the bolt all of a sudden just came loose and then i pulled the op rod again and the bolt completely came out loose. I just took it out of the received with my fingers. Luckily my friends who watched this have little knowledge of how guns operate so they saw something come out but did not know what it was. They knew it is a chicom gun that looks really cool and that's all that matters. Their lack of knowledge of gun operation spared me some embarrassment and smirking. I don't really care what my friends think, the bolt that came loose is what worries me a bit. I wonder what would happen if it came loose while firing live ammo and the bolt flew out and hit me right between my eyes or worse, hit someone standing beside me. Is this really possible for the bolt to come loose during actual shooting?
Either way, I did not do enough research before I ordered this from Marstar and now knowing all the possible and evident issues, I would not have bought it. I have to admit, I am not very handy with tools, I have no proper place to do all the mechanical tweaking (I do have a nice little area where I clean my guns) but again, I have little interest in the handi-work tweaking. I love taking my guns apart and putting them together but when it comes to actually using tools to manufacture other objects to make something else work, this is where my inclination and creativity ends. Yet still, every time I look at it, with its mold covered, dirty and oily soft stock, loose bolt that flies out, out of index barrel, one mag that won't lock in place, rough moving op rod (can even stay mid-way in its track), I still love this genetically challanged gun, I still love the way it looks at me and seems to say "I love you papa, please don't sell me". "Of course I won't, my darling..." I say "you will always be my favourite gun even though you might never see the range".

Now, come on over to one of my clinics when you can. Download (for free) the 2004 Abbotsford Clinic found in one of the sticky(ies) at the top.

Cheers,
Barney

Actually I did download it and start watching it but my hyperactive kids (4 year old and 1 and 1/2 year old) drive me mad until midnight when they finally collapse so I never had the chance to finish watching it. I suppose the clinics have all the answers? Do you also check for out of index barrels and offer some tools to fix it right there? I suspect my M14 might have this issue as the front sight seems to leaning to the right (barrel not tight enough?) I saw that you provide a long list of suggested tools to bring along to your clinic. I am not sure if your are serious but beside a couple of screw drivers, I own no other tools so I could just stand there with a stupid look on my face pretending that I know what a vice or TIG Welder is.....

Time to learn some man skills, dude. You cannot look at these things as problems. As I've told my 19 year old son ,when you look at things as a problem the wall goes up in your head and its make solving it that much harder.Think of how you can solve your issues as a challenge and then it becomes easier and more enjoyable.
