I am trying to justify this purchase to myself.
I would look at a few cases, in order to reduce my per price shipping cost.
What is the value of the brass as scrap? Last i heard, brass is $2.00-$3.00/lb, but is rifle brass considered "normal" brass?
I assume this brass cannot be resized to 30.06?
From what i am reading, the powder can be re-used...and safely?
I would also consider selling off any surplus bullets that i wouldn't end up using. Was is the value of bullets like this nowadays?
The brass can be sold as scrap brass in my experience, but the primers will either need to be "killed" or removed. As for killing primers, I mean "fire" them, as also in my experience, soaking in water or even oil, even for up to a week, only kills them temporarily.
The only common cartridge that comes to mind that these could be resized to is 9.3X62, but I'd expect that age brittleness would result in a lot of culls. It's Berdan-Primed too, so all told I'd say this course of action is not practicable.
Lots has been written here on CGN on using the powder.
The bullets have been peddled here on CGN in the past, and seemed to fetch $0.10-0.15 a round, but the market is small. Another option is to melt the bullets to extract the lead. They're not quite FMJ, as the base is open and when melted, the lead freely flows from the base. Each 218 gr bullet yields about 180 grs of lead, so 1250 rounds yields not only 9+ lbs of powder and 35+ lbs of brass, but 30+ lbs of lead, as well as the five belts.
Price of shipping notwithstanding, a resourceful person willing to do a bit or work, can salvage quite a bit of valuable components from this.
That said, sit on the fence too long (like in the past) and this will all be moot.
