To the editor:

We have lived in north Nestleton for 31 years and every fall the Canada geese flock together in the farmer’s field next to us in preparation for their long migration south. It is such a marvelous sight to watch them leave in formation for their journey.

Something went terribly wrong on the morning of Oct. 25, 2014. At 7:30 a.m., I was awoken by multiple gun shots. It really frightened me. The geese were terribly upset. The shots kept coming and coming and I could hear that things were out of control. As I lay in my bed, horrified, I heard screams of terror and crying from the defenseless geese.

The continual shooting went on for well over an hour and then the cries ceased and the gun shots ceased. I knew the geese were dead and I was devastated. It all happened right outside my bedroom window.

My neighbour confronted these men and all they did was laugh as they loaded the dead geese into their trucks and left. All that remained was a chilly silence.

I am appalled that the new owner of this farm would allow these men on his land to commit such an act of violence. This was not hunting, but rather the massacre of an open field of geese. It was very upsetting and disturbing.

How and why was this permitted?

We need and want answers.

damn..............no pictures...............way to go guys nothing like the smell of ruffled feathers first thing in the morning to get the blood flowing....

off to my goose blind............

I didn't know geese could cry. Guess you learn something new every day. Btw looking forward to some roast goose but I'll hold back on the salt due to all the goose tears.

Could some one explain to this lady how a normal morning goose shoot sounds like. An hour of sporadic banging then it is done. Perhaps if she had an hour of sporadic banging in the morning she wouldn't be so up tight.

That is truly hilarious but it serves to show the mentality of a lot of non-hunters. She clearly thinks her neighbours farm in the Scugog area, an area overrun with resident Giant Canadas is a staging spot for southbound migrators. Never mind those resident birds are eating the farmers crops or crapping so much as they do spreading unwanted seeds to take root into future crops. Someone needs to explain this to these kinds of people.

How did you guys miss this? The next headline down!!

Maybe our successful goose hunters could make a donation of goose meat to the food bank and help feed the hungry?

OSHAWA -- Two burglaries within two months has left an Oshawa food provider in dire straits.

The Eating Well Ministries is a non-emergency food provider located on Celina Street in Oshawa and serves roughly 200 families per month. The organization asks families for a $20 donation and in return they can shop the pantry, filling a cart with groceries they select for themselves and choosing new clothing items.

With the organization already running on a shoestring budget, the money from users and supporters goes toward paying for necessities such as the utilities. But break-ins on Sept. 21 and Nov. 3 have left the charity struggling to pay its bills.

“When they hit us we ended up with $18.20 in the bank,” said Ed Simpson, the organization’s founder.

Mr. Simpson said he’s not sure how much money was stolen in September as volunteers slip donations into his office as they come in, and there is also a collection area at the front of the pantry. Generally, the cash is removed from the facility every day but he had been unable to collect it between Thursday and Saturday, which meant the thieves may have stolen more than $300. A laptop, a stereo, printer ink and an iPhone 3 were also stolen.

The burglars pulled items out of the freezers and strewed them across the floor in the pantry area, seemingly leaving behind what they couldn’t take.

“When we came in it was such a mess we could hardly walk,” said Mr. Simpson. “Over $70 of meat was sitting right on the floor.”

The food had to be thrown out as it was out of the freezer for hours. Mr. Simpson said he believes the people who broke in were clients of the charity as they knew exactly where to look for the cash and they even disabled a security recording.

The second time there was only a limited amount of money on the premises, less than $100. A neighbour who heard a noise alerted police to the possible break-in.

“When officers arrived, they did locate a male, I believe he was hanging off the second-storey balcony as he tried to escape; the male was arrested and a female was arrested nearby,” said DRPS Sergeant Bill Calder.

Police recovered a quantity of cash and a bag of clothing.

Forty-year-old Mark Moreau of Oshawa is facing multiple charges including breaking and entering, theft under $5,000, possessing break and enter instruments and possessing property obtained by crime. Susan Ansell, 38, also of Oshawa is charged with breaking and entering and possessing property obtained by crime.

Police have not connected the second break-in to the first one.

Meanwhile, Mr. Simpson is trying to prevent another break-in with homemade solutions including adding wood to the balcony to make it inaccessible and covering it with plastic. Some of the damage is still evident. A window panel on the back door remains broken and there’s a hole in the wall between the office area and the food pantry that was used to access the donation box.

“The people who come here are devastated,” he said of the reaction to the burglaries. “We had a girl come in here the other day crying, saying ‘you’ve helped us so much’.”

What the The Eating Well really needs, said Mr. Simpson, is financial donations to make up for the stolen funds, so it can cover its utilities and other expenses. To donate, look for The Eating Well Ministries on www.canadahelps.org or call 905-579-1706.

Very one sided view of the "massacre". I would think that having a large flock of geese waking one up, crapping, and eating your crop would be incentive to have the hunters over. Canada Geese are in no way endangered, could not be further from the truth.

Certain that the hunt was legal. If the woman is upset with this, perhaps she needs to move back to the city, next to the supermarket were meat is made.

That was un real reading that - thats exactly what heppened to me and some buddies last year , we had permission and the land owner forgot to tell his wife and she snapped
