Mauser build cal. Decision

So many choices have been offered and all have merit. Lots of options to consider, and after all is said and done you will be the one to make a decision. You have varmints, deer and moose/elk/bear covered with your previous builds on other actions. While many custom Mausers have been chambered in .270W and .30-06 (wonderful cartridges) I lean more toward the classic metric chamberings on this action. In between the .223 and the .308 I would suggest building a 6.5x55. I have just completed one myself and am more than pleased with it. Good accuracy and light recoil. A 7x57 would also be a good choice. For larger game I built a 9.3x62 and very much enjoy that round too. We'll be interested to know what your choice will be.....keep us posted.

I was thinking bigger bore, but the 9.3x62 is hard to find components for. Lots of stuff for the 35 whelen, but like you folks said, dont have the class. The 7x57, Is also hard to find components for. 6.5x55 might be an option, but its far from large bore.

Still undecided,

With all the positive "waves" about the 6.5 x 55 I'm almost tempted to buy one - in a mauser of course. I'm sort of a convert to this action after I have not had my rounds fumble in this action like I have in some of the pushfeed models out there.

I have been introduced to the 6 mm family (my 243) and must say I am very impressed.

Good morning, JPB.

Really, components for either of these cartridges are not hard to find at all. There are at least forty different bullets suitable for the 7X57, and I count a dozen for the 9.3 just from North American manufacturers. Both bullets and brass are available in a few days from most of the vendors on this site.

You won't be disappointed in either cartridge, that's certain.

The 9.3x62 is dead simple to find components for. I've bought them at Wholesale, P&D and TradeEx. Likewise the 7x57 is so mainstream it isn't funny and components are almost everywhere (considering the popularity of .284" bullets in general). I'd even hazard a guess that 9.3x62 ammo is as easy to get, or even easier, than 35 Whelen.

When I stated hard to find componants for, i guess i should have looked for them here in Canada as well.

What about barrels. Having a hard time finding a short chambered one in 9.3x62. Not wanting to bust my bank account on this one. 7x57 is easy to get a hand on. I do a fair amount of shooting, so cost of reloading is going to play a factor here.

There^ :).

Were it me, I'd be selling off the .308 and .300wm. Pick yourself up a 9.3x62 FN98 Husqvarna .... and ride off into the sunset with your .223 varminter, 7x57 and 9.3x62 Mausers!.

As to cost, using expanded /06 brass, and an .368" NOE 286gr mold really took the hurt off of this punters pocketbook.

Short chambered Mauser barrels can be a bit of a rarity up here. That said, any dealer with import paperwork should be able to source one from Brownell's or another supplier South of the Border. Jerry at Mystic Precision or Shawn at North Shore Barrels could probably point you in the right direction. I see a few offered at Brownell's in 35 Whelen and 7x57 but nothing in 9.3x62, oddly enough. Douglas, Pac-nor and Lothar Walther offer short chambered barrels in 9.3x62. I'm sure that one of the dealers can bring one in.

You will have to open up the bolt face slightly and get a new extractor, shouldn't be hard. Brass can be made from .338 WM cases with the belts turned off.
