I'm running into problems with a Mauser commercial rifle. If I slam bolt open on an empty chamber//empty magazine, the follower pops up out of position and into the action interfering with bolt close. Is this common or a problem? It can make next bullet feed difficult...

military follower, designed to block bolt open on an empty magazine.

a commercial follower will have a bevel at the rear so the bolt face can push it down.

Would it be possible for the OP to post some pictures of 5he problem areas?

Thanks for trying to help... here's an image.

It looks to me that the bevel on your follower isn’t large enough. The bevel has to be large enough so that when the bolt hits it, the follower is forced down so that the bolt can ride over it.

I have attached a photo of a FN Mauser follower that shows the bevel and which appears to be wider than yours.

It might help the OP to understand why that lip is there - it is to prevent the operator from inadvertently closing the bolt on an empty chamber, leaving said operator with the mistaken impression that he has a chambered round. A "click" when expecting a "boom" is almost as loud as a "boom" when expecting a "click". That lip has no effect whatsoever if there is at least one cartridge left in the magazine. Most commercial sporters like Winchester and Remington have ramp or curve at rear of the follower that allows the bolt to close on an empty chamber. To each his own, I guess - as is, it is not a flaw, it has a purpose.

This is the nature of the beast.
My old 21H has the same habits.
I found a solid follower and adjusted the angle to allow the bolt to close
on an empty action.

I have an older Interarms Mark X in .270, which had the same issue when I acquired it many years ago ... gunsmith suggested I could bevel it myself. Can't remember what I used ... file? dremel? followed by sandpaper. Anyway, it's been fine ever since.

I don't buy it, because it only 'sometimes' pop out of position and into action.

Now that I polished the follower it seems to glide smoother over bolt and doesn't pop up anymore unless I slam bolt open 6-7 times which wouldn't happen in real life scenario.

I'm content with rifle as it is now...

Thanks for Gunsmithing forum!!

There could be 'nuff play in the receiver/bolt to allow this to happen if the bolt
was pushed to the left and down a bit.

Don't have anything in front to sample but my first thought was that it could be the wrong follower ie one from an intermediate or small ring Mauser.

Either the follower has been modified, or the rails on the action have been modified. The whole follower is popping up out of position. The square corner on the left side of the follower should be held in place by the action rails.

Followers aren't expensive, try getting a new one and see if that fixes the problem.
