Maverick 88

All of the Mossberg/Maverick tactical style guns are a straight cylinder bore barrel.

You will need to get the barrel threaded for chokes if you're competing in 3-gun.
Knocking down steel plates with bird-shot is the norm for shotgun stages.

You want to see a grown man cry? Watch him try knocking down a Texas-Star with a cylinder-bore shotgun.

The guy in this video is most definitely using a tight choke.

I had a mav 88. Its a good gun. Pretty much a mossy 500 without the ability to accessorize so your stuck with how it is out of the box pretty much. The 500 has the same design just smoother feeling action. Im pretty sure only the 590/590-A1's have metal trigger gaurds. But the 88 is definitely a tough gun. If I didnt buy a 500 I would buy an 88 again.

Thanks for the heads up. Most of the tactical shotguns I have been looking at with 20" or shorter barrel come with a straight cylinder bore. I might look into other options.

Yeah. Those tactical shotguns are great for their intended purpose; Which is launching 00-Buckshot down a hallway at a home invader.

But action-shotgun competition is much different. Buckshot is almost unheard of in a match.

Knocking down steel plates with birdshot is 90% of what you'll be doing. Stuff like that Texas-Star I posted.

Get a shotgun that's good at doing that.

Any recommendations on a shotgun that will work for matches and not break the bank? I am still looking for a short barrel for my Winchester but it seems to be impossible to get in Canada. This is the reason for going the route of a new shotgun.

The cheapest/easiest route is to get a Remington 870 with a 28" vent-rib (screw in choke) barrel from Cabelas for $400.

Then get a Nordic Components long magazine extension (and barrel clamp) for it from Cactus Tactical.
A plus 6 tube will be almost the same length as your barrel, and will give you a capacity of 10+1.

That would be my recommendation.

The only reason why the Remington 28" shotgun is better than the Mossberg 28" is that you cannot extend the magazine tube on Mossberg or Maverick.

They are a closed-end tube that cannot be extended.

I have the field model (28in vent rib barrel with screw chokes) and love it. Over 2000 rounds and zero issues.

My friend recently bought a security model, and that's fun too. I think you can get a longer magazine tube for the Mossbergs, but it involves a new barrel too (because the barrel screws into the end of magazine tube, so a longer tube means the barrel wouldn't fit) I've seen them on Brownells' site.

This is a great set up but it won't work for me. The 3gun matches I plan to shoot are PPC and have a length restriction of 22" on the shotgun.

Looked at a Remington 870 express HD today. 18" barrel and 7 shot capacity with 2 3/4 shells. On sale for $369!! I thought this was a good deal. The 870's offer a lot more components for modifications compared to some of the other shotguns out there.

The maverick will put you at a disadvantage due to the magazine.

A rem870 is much easier to get a longer mag cause they can use extensions.

If that doesn't matter to you then you can't beat the maverick for the price. Getting it threaded for chokes would probably be less than the price difference between that and an 870 - and the 870 still needs an extension and threaded.

It would definitely be easier to buy a model with an extended choke tube right from the manufacturer. I have seen many extensions for the Mossberg. The Remington seems to be king when it comes to off the shelf modifications.
