The OP needs to tell us what weight and velocity of shell he was shooting.
It's been a long time since I picked up a maverick, but every time I hear someone rave about how light a shotgun is, unless its meant to be carried far more than shot, I cringe thinking about the level of recoil the gun must develop. If the maverick is light this could be part of the problem.
Some very good advise on stance and gun mount here too. Most new shooters have a weight backwards stance. This tends to have only the bottom of the recoil pad in contact with the shoulder which concentrates the recoil in a very small area. Perfect receipe for a painful bruise. Nose over toes and have the recoil pad make even contact with your shoulder over its entire surface
