I am a newbie, and I am wondering what is the most powerful type of guns or models that we can legally obtain in Canada. I heard that ak-47 is banned? Is .50bmg also banned in Canada.
Then what type of "powerful"guns are we allow to have
Are we allow to have mg42

Yes AK-47's are prohibited.

Why do you ask what the most powerful cartridge available in Canada is?

Actually it's larger than .50 BMG by a long shot.....and costs far more to shoot.

Join the black powder club and get yourself a 4-10 pound cannon. It will cost you less to buy and about the same per shot as what's newer and legal.

Actually, just get one. Then you can be a mall pirate. It's a little more obscure than a mall ninja, but quite a bit cooler in the long run.

If you are serious, get your PAL and buy a long barrel shotgun. Short ones look much cooler but you get a huge amount of destructive power in a long barrel 12 gauge if you're just into breaking things with it. I have a long barrel and a short barrel pump and the long one is... more powerful with much less muzzle blast. It's hard to tell at short range but the long barrel one is more powerful and more destructive..

"...Are we allow to have mg42..." Not a real one.
"....50 BMG is perfectly legal..." Out of some rifles, not the MG.
Go take the PAL course.

You really don't NEED to go 50BMG to get a powerful gun. Most rifles are considered to be very powerful. A 30cal magnum is a handful for most people, and capable of taking all game on the continent (Angry Grizzlies the only real exception). AK's really aren't all they are talked up to be. A mid power cartridge with poor accuracy, sure they are reliable, but so are most guns if you take care of them. An SKS fires the same round, and you can get one of those fairly affordably.

Take the safety courses, get your licenses, buy guns, enjoy :)

Welcome to the board. As stated earlier, take the courses and read lots. I think you might be using the word "power" ambiguously. A gun's power is usually divided into three categories.

1) Bullet size/shape/weight.
2) Cartridge Powder charge
3) The action of the gun. Semi-auto/full auto/bolt action/lever action/single shot.

So what do you consider powerful? A large calibre single shot rifle that can stop a car or a small round that can shoot many rounds quickly. If you are not specific you'll have a hard time finding good answers.

The ak47 is prohibited, but it is not considered powerful by any means. 99% of all standard hunting rifles are WAaaaaay more powerful. The ak47 is banned because it is fully automatic, and it is russian. Also given the more recent political climate it is an "evil" gun that steals babies in the night and eats them. Governments don't want you support baby-eating inductries. The Ak's 7.62x39 would be considered a mid power rifle just barely acceptable for deer at close range. Under 200 yards. Compare this with the gold standard of regular hunting rounds the venerable 30-06 and you have roughly the same size bullet but twice the powder charge and we are not even talking about magnum rounds yet.

The MG42 is also prohib as it is full auto. You are not allowed to have one in Canada. If you have the time and the means, I recommend visiting the states to rent something F/A and enjoy yourself. I'm partial to Virginia.

As for the most powerful, I'm not sure as you can get pretty exotic. The Gold Standard for big guns is the 50BMG. Very big rifle, very powerful round. a 700 grain projectile at 3000fps is one hell of a round. But unless you are made of money you won't want one. They cost about $10 per bullet and that is only after spending somewhere around 5k for the rifle and thousands more on reloading equipment. The component of these rounds are not commercially available either. You can't just walk into Bass Pro and buy a box of 20.

just get a .50 revolver. so powerful you'll probably only want to shoot it a few times. well you might want to shoot it more, but your hand is going to be useless for 'solo' time.

Just figured that I'd mention that there are two variants of the AK that are legal in Canada. The Valmet M-78 and the Valmet Hunter. They are non-restricted, though they cost about $4000 or more. Also, the MG42 is not specifically listed as prohibited, but since the only ones in country would be either full auto or converted auto(?), the only way you could presently have one would be to somehow get a parts kit and build your own receiver for it, then submit it to the CFC for review. Or you could buy an MG34, which is perfectly legal and non-restricted.

Although this is indeed a noob question, it is very interesting, and one that I have thought about a lot.

My present choice for power is a Ruger 44 Carbine, that delivers 6 pills weighing 240 grains each in a semi-automatic fashion.

When I get the urge to exhibit firepower I reach for my old Mossburg 500 and load it up with either heavy game loads or 3 inch 000 buckshot.I then shoot at some sundry device that I have no further need of, like an old computer or other appliance. It belches lead, kicks like a mule, and gives a satisfying blast of power.[I clean my mess up afterwards]

So auto guns are banned in Canada. I also heard that for restricted firearms you are only allow to have 10 rounds (is that rule only apply to pistol)? So no assault rifle in Canada like fn p90? One more question is this legal?

Since I am going to take my restricted firearms lesson soon, I am just wondering any good recommendation (as in good auto guns).
I don't have non-restricted licenses

So we are not allow to have auto
One more question can I take the restricted firearms test before non-restricted?
Plus what is the difference between pal and restricted firearms license?

yes, the basic answer is a semiauto handgun 10 rounds, semi auto rifle 5 rounds, non-semi auto long gun, no limit.

thats a precision rifle. the exact model might not be availible, but a clone wouldnt be hard to build with a good stock and a donor action. its going to be expensive, in fact, it may rip the wallet right off your ass.

full auto, no. semi auto varies on our overlords, but at present we can own some.

restricted firearms licence allows you to buy restricted firearms.

just a friendly hint, a good way to come across as a troll is to make your first post asking about what auto rifles and sniper rifles you can own. take some time to read on the site and learn. good luck on your PAL exam.

He's not new to firearms, he plays Counter-strike!

Whatever leads to to the path of (legal :)) interest in firearms is okay..:p.....

A semi-auto shotgun with 3 1/2 inch shells is also fun...:D
