I am a newbie, and I am wondering what is the most powerful type of guns or models that we can legally obtain in Canada. I heard that ak-47 is banned? Is .50bmg also banned in Canada.
Then what type of "powerful"guns are we allow to have
Are we allow to have mg42
Welcome to the board. As stated earlier, take the courses and read lots. I think you might be using the word "power" ambiguously. A gun's power is usually divided into three categories.
1) Bullet size/shape/weight.
2) Cartridge Powder charge
3) The action of the gun. Semi-auto/full auto/bolt action/lever action/single shot.
So what do you consider powerful? A large calibre single shot rifle that can stop a car or a small round that can shoot many rounds quickly. If you are not specific you'll have a hard time finding good answers.
The ak47 is prohibited, but it is not considered powerful by any means. 99% of all standard hunting rifles are WAaaaaay more powerful. The ak47 is banned because it is fully automatic, and it is russian. Also given the more recent political climate it is an "evil" gun that steals babies in the night and eats them. Governments don't want you support baby-eating inductries. The Ak's 7.62x39 would be considered a mid power rifle just barely acceptable for deer at close range. Under 200 yards. Compare this with the gold standard of regular hunting rounds the venerable 30-06 and you have roughly the same size bullet but twice the powder charge and we are not even talking about magnum rounds yet.
The MG42 is also prohib as it is full auto. You are not allowed to have one in Canada. If you have the time and the means, I recommend visiting the states to rent something F/A and enjoy yourself. I'm partial to Virginia.
As for the most powerful, I'm not sure as you can get pretty exotic. The Gold Standard for big guns is the 50BMG. Very big rifle, very powerful round. a 700 grain projectile at 3000fps is one hell of a round. But unless you are made of money you won't want one. They cost about $10 per bullet and that is only after spending somewhere around 5k for the rifle and thousands more on reloading equipment. The component of these rounds are not commercially available either. You can't just walk into Bass Pro and buy a box of 20.
