Hey guys,

I picked up a Browning Maxus Sporting Golden Clays as my first gun a week ago and had a few issues yesterday. At the end of yesterday the gun has had 300 rounds through it over 3 days, 100 each day, and was cleaned after each use. I also did an initial cleaning when I got it.

The problem was at the last couple station of sporting clays yesterday, the second shell wasn't being thrown into the chamber. The first round fired and ejected as usual, but the second was sitting ontop of the carrier and wasnt brought up. This happened 4 times on and off at the last two stations, second round through the course.

I'm new to this and have no idea what is going on. Has anyone had this issue with a Maxus?

Thanks for any help,
Sheldon

Did it look like this?

And to the safety Nazis...that is a dummy round!

This is pics of my Gold Golden Clays...the Maxus is damned near identical in setup.
The problem has to do with the bolt release and the carrier...after a few hundred rounds of heavier loads it clears itself up but this is what I do with them to help with light load reliability. (This gun hasn't been "fixed" yet.)

Lightly radius/bevel and then polish the edge that the pen is pointing at. You don't need a large bevel/radius here..just get the sharp edge rounded off.

This edge is already radiused/beveled so just polish it up as well as the area bellow the tip of the pen.

The surface the pen points at here should be polished up as well. As the shell exits the mag tube it rides up this part (bolt release/shell stop) and releases the bolt so that it can feed/chamber the fresh shell.

Having all these surfaces as smooth and polished as possible greatly improves the reliabilty of the Gold and Maxus shotguns when light recoiling rounds are used.

Thanks for the quick reply and picts! Could you possibly PM me the first pict? Its a little small on my comp.

I will take out the trigger mech in the morning (I just moved and have no idea where my punch/tools are haha)

Its weird that a brand new shotgun would have issues with the areas not being polished? (with the exception of the one sharp edge which I thought they would have caught by now)

Nice job VLT79 :)

To the Op not weird. Have to remember how many 100,000 of these produced so even the very best quality control checks and balances would miss a sharp edje from time to time especially when the gun tested fine for them or it would have never left the plant.

Careful when you pull the trigger group! Theres a hollow pin at the forend of it that was loose and fell right out of mine. I musta pulled the trigger with it out cause when I put it back together everything was locked up tight! Had to disassemble the whole trigger set-up to get it working again. Actually,I probaly never would have without the help of my gunsmith Lindsey.

VLT79, I just took out my trigger assembly, and my carrier doesnt have that vertical metal piece shown in the first pict. Everything is pretty similar except that piece isnt there.

Everything else seems to be bur-free and smooth so i dont know what to do from here

Edit: That was my mistake! It was late and I was pointing the pen at the wrong "tab"! I will post a new picture in a minute!

This is the trigger group from my Maxus the small upward tab that the hook is touching is the tab that comes in contact with the bolt release .the out side edge should have a slight bevel .

this one is a little better in focus.

haha no problem. Yours looks a lot more square than mine. You can see this one has a pretty good taper on it already. The front of it is a bit sharp, but there is very little material there to take away.

Rembolt does it look to you from the op's pic his bevel is on the opposite side?? or material removed in the back side Some hard to tell by pics but. What do you think??

Never mind that last pic the op posted made it clearer, might not be material removed from the back but the tab slightly twisted to the left. There definately seems to be a different grind on that tab also yours Rembolt being straight across the the Op's on an angle. You dudes have to some how post similiar shots.

To me that piece looks good . can you post a pic of the inside of the receiver showing the bolt release . also check to see that your mag follower is not sticky as it needs to push the new round from the mag with some force . also does the bolt release move freely ( not sticky ) I realize its under spring tension but should move smoothly and free .

They all benefit from a little polishing. Use emery cloth to knock the burrs and sharp edges off. Another thing I am going to try is a slightly lighter spring behind the bolt release...that should help prevent the shell being fed, from the mag tube, from getting "stuck" before it trips the bolt.

You can see in your pics NVG that the carrier tab is actually digging into the bolt release and with the light loads it is hanging up right at the edge of where the radiused corner starts. If you have those mis-feeds again I bet that if you simply touch the bottom of the carrier it will feed the shell to the chamber. If you are afraid of removing too much material on the carrier then give the bolt released a little more angle/radius.

yeah i noticed that in the picts, hard to see in person though haha. I will go get some emrery cloth and see what happens. Thanks for all the help! Il be skeet shooting tomorrow so i'll post how it goes.
