May 27 Bear Pix - finally, a shooter? (see end)

get yourself some doughnuts. Bears love them. a friend made a bait cage with a slot to keep the bears there longer. It was just big enough to get a paw into it. He filled it with bagels and doughnuts. The bears would take the bagels out and throw them away. They pretty much just ate the dognuts.

Donuts are a bit of a tricky proposition to get around here. The local Tims owner won't give them away.

Anyway, the other guy I am hunting with this year has just got his hands on a buttload of popcorn (buttered!) so that should be good to try.

I went back to the stand again today and nothing hit it yesterday, but I found a massive pile of bear crap that I missed the day before.

Bait was hit again on the weekend . . .

I get garbage bags of buttered popcorn from a local movie theater to top off the barrels.A lot of guys make an iron cage with small holes in it and put a beaver carcass in it chained to a tree beside the barrel.I suspended a 5 gallon bucket upside down on a rope with holes drilled through the sides 7' up with a beaver inside .It keeps away ravens and martens and allows the bear to tear off stips but not get the entire bait. Honey burns work too.Take a tin can with an inch of honey in it and place it on a heat source ie small camp burner on low and let it burn dry can add bacon drippings. If you get a nocturnal bear leave a transistor radio on the bait when dark to deter visits and set up during the day. Some of these older bears are smart.Harold

We've burned molasses in there, and poured it on the bait. I tried using cheap grape pop, too.

That sweatshirt you can see hanging from a tree in the background is actually a barrel (with a sweatshirt around it, to keep out crows and such) full of old lobster shells, mackerel fillets, and smelts that are full of spawn. It stinks to high heaven and seems to attract attention.

That radio trick is really smart. If I had some sort of timer I could use to make it only work from about 10 pm to about 7 am that would be perfect.

I know of guys that placed a second stand behind where they heard the bear holding up waiting for the hunters to leave after dark.Caught him looking at the wrong stand......good luck............Harold

Do you guys think these are the same bear in all three pix? Do you think it's the same bear as in the earlier pix? He looks kinda small in a couple of the pictures, and I am wondering if it's a small one that's afraid to come in when the first bear is around.

I am also assuming it's a boar. I sure hope it's not a sow with cubs - I haven't seen any on the camera yet, though.

The pictures run all day long except for late morning, when I go in to the stand, SOOOOOOOO

I think I should be able to get one on Saturday. Hopefully.

Good idea moving it.....I would invest in the steel box shroud for your camera, mine got bashed in last year towards the end of Fall bear season when the big ones started coming out.

Sooooo, looks like I have a problem on my hands. Mr. Bear is actually a Mrs. Bear!

Unsure of what to do now. I could just stop running bait to get rid of her, or I could keep it up in hopes that she will bring in a boar. I think the best bet is to cut way, way down on the bait, so she is running around to other food sources as well and tracking that grease smell around, maybe enough to bring a boar in.

there will be others that will probably come hit the bait, give it some time. And please don't shoot a mother with cubs. I had a female that I kept an eye on for 2 full seasons with cubs, I tagged her last season.
