Maybe I'll Bang a Deer Today..........Finally, Photo Up

As far as shooting does goes, the season here is forestalled until Oct 10 so that any fawns are totally self sufficient by then and does are open season. I don't make the rules, I just live within them..................mostly.

Season is open, I have 2 tags and live in an open zone..............deer wander through the yard 2 or 3 times each day. Please note I have not used the term "hunt"..........but a nice fresh backstrap roasted up medium rare with fresh spuds and onions, is kinda hard to turn down...............Got an ugly one spike horned fellow that should be eaten before he spreads his genes too far.
Might even take a pic or 2 if y'all want but it ain't gonna be no trophy...........
The big question is though, which cartridge should I use? Bear in mind we are likely talking less than 50 mtrs and most likely go for the head shot, or spine at the base of the skull. I now have several sighted in and ready to go........204, 6.5X55, 300 WSM, 7mm RUM, .470 NE, 350 RM, 375 H&H and 257 Bee..........plus likely more if I looked........7-08, 308, anyway I'm thinking maybe the 6.5...........I have 5 243s and can't say if any are sighted in.......shame on me, I know they'd be perfect. Just bedded the hornet or it would be excellent as well.........before you flame me for using a hornet, remember I live with a few neighbors around and I don't need to take the shot unless 100% guaranteed success..........there's always tomorrow or Sunday or Monday.............. I could likely arrow one as well but I'm probably out of practice and might blow the shot or pull my infamous "palm the bow" trick that I do when excited or not concentrating enough.

Ill pay shipping both ways to send you a .270 if you promise not to take it apart!;)

Edit: I didnt read ahead, looks like I'm late! Nice work on the double! Hope you got to enjoy a meal of back straps.

Yep, she's gonna be backstraps tonight................with spuds, onions, carrots and maybe broccoli

What no Gravy and Red Wine??

They're weaned, who cares?

Exactly and what doesnt kill them(young deer) makes them stronger too.

Thanks for sharing the trials and tribulations of this successful hunt Doug.

Well of course there will be gravy Rob, and my wine cellar has many possibilities.............I just didn't mention the wine and gravy as I thought they were just "a given" , you know, just understood that they would accompany such a meal.
Oh and Rob, I wouldn't use the term "hunt" when describing this harvesting of deer, I just basically walked out my back door and shot 2 deer in my pasture.........that's it..........that's all. I have waited more than a month to do it , many sunrise vigils in my porch with my coffee and smokes, but a "hunt" it was not...........

Soooo, curious as to how this good fortune came 'bout?
Ya parked the Jag at the far end of the field to scare them furrs towards yee?

Furgitt tuh ask.......... oww wuzz thuh brawwkerr-ee?

c-fbmi, thank you for point of clrafication on the terms and conditions of your success.
Now, if I may suggest for your dining pleasure to wash down this loverly venison a bottle or two of some Italian Passoni San Gimignano Sangiovese 2008...
I hear the deer just bang flop over this Red.
Best Regards and lots of Dribbled Gravy,
Rob

Actually Rob I went for a nice light Italian chianti. The meal was outstanding, didn't have any broccoli so we went with baby potatoes, carrots, onions and mushrooms all cooked in with the backstrap.
Not much wonder I'm 40 lbs overweight...........but it was good and the wine is one of my favorites, goes with pretty much anything.

Having the doe's heart tonight guys, with left over spuds and vegies from last night. MMMMMMMMMMM

Wife's got 2 more tags so as soon as I get these two cut and in the freezer I'm gonna get her to harvest a couple more. There was 2 on the upper lawn last night at last light....................HHHMMMMMMM
