McMillian TAC-50 in Canada?

The differences from the 7WSM to the 7RUM is 100 to 200fps. Not a big deal but the recoil, noise and costs soar.

If you want to get into LR hunting/shooting, consider reloading as a must do. Better to spend the money on reloading gear then some mega dollar rifle. They are only as good as what you feed it anyways. Plus at the cost of factory ammo, you will go broke practising AND likely not having the same degree of accuracy.

By the time you buy enough factory ammo to test, you have purchased all your reloading gear and can reload for a lot less money.

With my reloads, my Savage is sub MOA as far as I want to hunt. All the accuracy I could ever use in the field for less then some will spend on a stock alone.

If you must use factory ammo, then the choice is the 7RM. Pretty sure you can find some form of factory ammo anywhere hunting supplies are sold. The WSM, and RUM are no where near as popular (except in 30cal form). Pretty sure it is still one of the top 3 belted magnums on this planet.

Hey all, this is my first post and was wondering if anyone has an information on the McMillian TAC-50. Is it a restricted firearm in Canada? I've been reading that finding .50 BMG rounds in Canada can be next to impossible, but I'd really love to have one of these beasts for my own personal entertainment. Are there any cheaper variants to the McMillian TAC style rifles besides the prohibited "Light fifty" from barrett?

........... Ive read great things over the last month about 3 cartridges in particular. The .270, the 30-06, and the .308.

Is this in anyway shape or form accurate?

What about other Calibers such as 7mm mag, .280, 7mm-06, .300 mag, .300 savage and British?

My hunting style:
Mostly stalking, lots of open area and fields, thin hardwood forest. I love taking long range shots 300\400+ yards as long as I can get an ethical shot so the more range I can get out of a rifle without sacrificing stopping power, the better.

Thoughts?

Since you asked.....

If you "really really, must have, gonna hold my breath until I get one" want a 50, have one built, or buy one of the many used Steyr HS50's on the market that people have dumped.

As for hunting, for more than 50 years, the biggest game on this continent was hunted with cartridges no bigger than a 30-30, 30-06 and .303.

You don't need a magnum anything to hunt with. 30-06 or 308 will last generations, the ammo is cheaper and they shoot the same bullets as a 300 magnum. 270 is just a 30-06 with a smaller lighter bullet.

Cartridges that kick the crap out of you not only hurt, but they are had to shoot accurately and you develop many bad shooting habbits as a result. If you want to hunt humanely, learn to hit where you aim, and learn when it is a bad idea to pull the trigger. Blowing a leg off with a 300WM is no more humane than doing it with a 223 and the false sense of killing power possessive of these larger cartridges may actually have the opposite effect.

Very well said.

Uh... Isn't the MacMillan TAC-50 rifle prohib by name?

The Barrett "Light Fifty" model M82A1, model 90 and any variants (M107) is of course prohib by name under former Former Prohibited Weapons Order No. 11....

...As for McMillan, the only references I can find is the M87, M87R, and the M88 Carbine, are all prohibited by name, under the same order as the Barrett.

I would never hunt with a .50 but I sure would love to shoot some steel plates at 1000 yards at the range :D

Why not????? It kills game just as dead as any other caliber.
Those that know little of the 50 cal all know how much damage it does to an animal, :p those of us who actually shoot a 50 on a regular basis, and hunt with them know the truth, which is that as long as you shoot an animal through the ribs there is LESS damage caused by the bullet than with many smaller calibers due to the fact that 50 cal bullet jackets are much thicker and do not expand well.

The 338 Lapua would also be a great choice for real long range work and is far less expensive to feed.

1000 yards is a short shot for a 50 and not much of a challenge for the 338s either.

You can't beat the Barnard GP, just put it in one of our stocks!

Ian

oh haha now i see what you mean, my apologies...

i've re-written my op to reflect what i really meant

the rifle it self may be.. but you could build one for certain.. barnard action, some kind of barrel, and an Ian Robertson stock, (those Heathens at Macmillian cant make stocks for their lives) ;) ....and you're away laughing

Hehe I was hoping I'd get at least a little love for the 50 from someone... lol
I never really took it for a practical hunting rifle with the weight and such, but it sure would be fun lol.

There's nothing "practical" about a fifty laff.
It's just one of those guns everyone wants to shoot or own at least once. They're heavy, expensive, hard to find ammo supplies for, when you do they're expensive,,,,, did I mention they,re expensive? Awkward, no one likes shooting beside them inless they have one too.
BUT,,,,,, they are a butt load of fun to have.
I'm not sure what I enjoy more, shooting it or watching the look on someone else's face when they fire it for the first time. The look of shock and surprise is priceless.

LOL LOVE the timmie ho's cup for size comparison.... yeah I cant imagine what shooting one is like. Something I def want to experience.

With respect to hunting with a 50, I've shot more coyotes with mine than targets and it is a damn fine varmint gun !
Accuracy way out yonder never ceases to amaze me and carcass damage is much less than a lot of smaller rifles.
I keep telling myself that I don't need a 50 because I also have a 338 Lapua AI and it too has amazing reach, however both are probably keepers. :)

I know Borden has a 1000 yds range but but other Borden anywhere else?

Thx
