Concur. It's a bit of a novelty especially for low/medium rings. I suspect part of the rationale MDT's latest instructions are to mount the ring with the level at the front (vice rear) is to reduce the angle and/or make it more visible with the left eye.
In reality, unless you don't have a solid rail base and the turret center bulb isn't close to the ring, the view is pretty obstructed. Meaning, you'd have the ring in the furthest forward position on the tube and just a base (vice a rail) and you have a chance at seeing it easily. If you decide to put the rings in reverse (to MDT's instructions) with the level at the rear ring (more typical), the angle is actually greater and the ocular or magnification ring will probably block the view as well.
Also, it's a pretty small bubble level.
