MDT Elite Muzzle brake alternatives

All effective brakes are obnoxious to be beside and will knock stuff off a bench if set next to the muzzle. Radial brakes do a weak job of mitigating recoil as well as kick up a ton of dirt/dust/debris if you shoot prone. You're supposed to setup a Garmin Xero about 6" back and 6" to the side in which case the brake doesn't effect it. I've run both generations of the Insite Heathen as well as the MDT Elite (and now their lightweight Hunt brake) for years and both of those are pretty low with regards to concussion at the shooter vs recoil mitigation. The Heathen errs slightly more towards lower concussion and the MDT Elite errs a bit more towards recoil mitigation but both are solid choices. It's also a very reasonable precaution to loctite and witness mark any self timing muzzle brake.

Barrel length plays a part in getting face gassed with rear facing ported brakes as well.
Longer the barrel the nicer they play.
MDT on my 308 16" 700 was miserable lol.
On my 24" 300WM much nicer.
Only radial brake I liked was the PA Severe Duty whatever model it's called, but it's pretty large, and has some preferences to how much gas it requires to behave. Worked real good on my 16" 308, made my 300WM twist hard left...the ports are angled opposite the barrel twist, too much gas she torques left lol.
Heathen gen 1 on my 24" 6.5PRC and it's a good fit, blast and recoil is mild.
My favorite always on any chambering is a Badger Thruster, requires gunsmith install to time and boring to caliber, but for a not huge 3 port brake, it always performs as expected, excellent recoil reduction, minimal blast, keeps scope on target, usually after I try a half dozen other brakes, I brake down and get my Smith to put a Thruster on.

I have a PVA Jetblast Hybrid on my 308, a bit loud, but much more pleasant than my PA M-11. I also have an EFAB for it, not as effective at recoil reduction, but blast isn't much different from a bare muzzle.
