Meat Grinders

Good used commercial grinders don't show up very often. I looked for quite a while, both craigslist and kijiji, throughout BC and Alberta.
The very few that I saw come up were priced higher than retail.

Sometimes guys get lucky, though.

Hard to rely on pure luck.

I don't know TJ, was on DL the other night and thought what the hell.
Seen a couple that went from $400.00 to $1400.00 and no I am not suggesting $1400.00 is inexpensive, but that 4-500 might be a good deal if one has to pay $400 for a Cabelas brand and someone looking for one knows what a decent unit is.
It's was just an observation of mine and thought I would share those thoughts with the masses.
Tourist season is still with us...oh wait wrong forum!
Moose season is upon us and looking for a meat grinder after dropping one is the wrong reason and time to go and look for one.

Grinders are like optics and rifles. Some want to pay the least, and get the least. i pay for quality, and get something I can use for my lifetime. A decent grinder has a price tag to match a high quality rifle or scope.
 
I just ran 15 lbs of goose/pork mix through my cheap Princess Auto Kitchener and it ate through the meat without a hiccup in a few minutes. As I mentioned in a previous post, if you're not processing a lot of meat there is nothing wrong with the Kitchener
 
3/4" piece of plywood, a 3/4hp 3450rpm electric motor connected to a 60:1 reduction box via a serpentine belt and 2 pulleys, and a #32 weston grinder. Stick a whole moose in one end and watch it slide out the other end.

It's even slow enough for making sausage if I swap the pulley's on the belt around.

It's pretty easy to over-think, and over-buy your needs too. Best is to buy what suits and not poo-poo other folks choices.

Balance is different for different folks.

The cheapo PA Grinder I have is working well enough, for now. I don't need to grind a whole hog every couple days though.

Well, since you ask, I have Leupolds on all my .22's, not Night Force but good enough for me. For many years i used a home made setup very similar to kolik1 suggests, and that works just fine, but was a pain in the butt to clean up afterwards. It would grind a 100 lb batch of sausage meat nice and quick though. I'd personally rather use a robust home assembled #32 grinder with belt drive than most of the small dainty ones that are really better suited to kitchen use, but then I never make usage or ground meat from only one deer, I'm usually doing batches of 50-200 lbs of meat at a time. I have a gear driven 1.5HP #32 size grinder, perfect for my needs. Might be too much of a good thing for the one deer a year hunter though.

My crappy old unit here cost me fifteen bucks at the afore mentioned garage sale, and I figure it has got through more than that many deer so far without any issues.

I have my old hand crank grinder tucked away for the inevitable blow-up, sure enough to happen about half way through the job. Someday. Maybe. Or the obstinate thing will outlast my needs, and go on to bother someone else's ears.

Typically I save all my trim and almost all of the front quarters of my deer till the last and grind the whole lot in one sitting, usually 30-40 pounds in a steel bowl. Works for me. If I had bigger needs, I would buy bigger tools.

Thank you for this I've been waiting with a Cabelas gift card to see if these go on sale before the Military Appreciation day next month (ill still go see if they beat the price, but doubtful) got the .75HP and the foot pedal (also 10$ off) should be plenty for my 1 deer a year, some home grinding, and geese :)
