meat or trophy

It's all about the meat, Unless mommabear has a good recipe for antler that she wants to share. 2 point or 10 point it doesn't matter as long as the freezer is full......

Nice plump does for sure. Bucks are nice to look at and muse over...but tender like frozen boots....not to mention that "rutting" smell. Not to distract from this topic...but how many people take deer for testing for CWD. I never have, but now SERM is offering culling tags in around Sask west areas, kinda makes me wonder about the current health situation?

I don't think too many hunter if given a choice are going to pass on a rack because it's bigger. Even in the dirty 30's in Sask. the most definately meat hunting parties would make bets on who could get the biggest trophy.

Depends what you mean by trophy hunting I guess. If it means passing up legal animals at the chance of getting a superior specimen (or more likely nothing) and still eating what you get then I guess that defines "trophy" hunting. Unfortunately that tag has been identified by the ignorant public as hunters that lop of a head and leave the rest behind.

I am a meat hunter until the rut kicks in for whitetails, then its strictly trophy hunting (if the freezer is approaching FULL).

Thats what I was thinking...Thanx

When Its buck season I am a hornhunter but still love to have steaks, sausage and the likes. My meat hunting comes in the form of a doe tag.

Meat hunting seems to really dull the whole expierence but to each his own.

Cheers!!

I'm a meat hunter! Although never taken a trophy buck. I have got some nice ones! Unfortunately I don't get enough time in the field to be selective enough to be a trophy hunter. (same as my women) LOL.

Dave.

Depends on how much meat there is in the freezer and how much longer the season is open.

When the season just starts, I will take my time and size up potential animals, and will pick and choose. If however, it's the last weekend and things are looking bleak... then everything and anything is fair game!

I'd also say it depends on experience. As a new hunter I will pop the first thing I can legally take. In the years to come I'm pretty certain I'll look for something to put on the wall. And, either way, it's meat! Right?

Never shot a doe and wont, never shot a spike and wont, never shot a fork and this year was the first time I ever took a 3 pt (mulies) Only ever shot 2 w/t and waited for 5x5 and better. All good eating animals and the meat means more to me than the headgear, but I love the headgear too.

The first legal animal is what we take. One time it will be a 60 inch bull, next time a yearling. They all taste great!

It's quite amazing how many really big moose and caribou show up when you're not all that gung-ho to get a big one.

Moose is all about meat!!! I want a young tender bull. This years addition we can almost cut steaks with a fork.

Deer is all about antlers. I won't shoot unless it willl go on the wall. But I am not a big fan of whitetail.

I am a trophy hunter, but not htat picky!!:)

Teh reason is, I don't have any kids. I eat 5 days a week at a restuarant, I have a GF who has tons of meat form her farm.

I dont' NEED the meat.

So I pass up alot of animals. Now, sometimes I see a nice looking 3 point and I'm hungry, and I've got another tag, or it's the last chance I get of the season, so BAM!! Becasue I DO like venisopn!!:)

And sometimes I just want to try out a different bullet or rifle, and shoot the first thing I see with it...

Buit the meat, while something I cherish, is not that big a deal to me, of rthe reaosns I outlined.

The fact I've never invited someone over for supper to eat antlers lends me to believe I'm a meat hunter: And the fact I don't turn down any legal buck. That said, if I have a shot at one of two bucks, the one with the bigger rack is probally going down.:D

Cheers

Have to agree.... Someone ask Riden what the deer he passed on this year looked like sitting in a field.

You see Riden doesn't have any teeth so a big trophy would be no good to him, chances are an older trophy would be too tuff for his dentures.;)

Well said,

Ya know, I think any hunter who said they coudn't care less if they ever saw a trophy is talking with a forked tung.

We all have our favorite game and want the optimum animal we can get for taste and texture, but when that animal is on the meat hook, most of us hope that the other ungulates out there we have tags for have son-of-a-b horns.:)
