Meat Hunter or Trophy Hunter?

I used to be a meat hunter (white tails) 'cause I had a large family to feed ...so first brown was down .Now for the last ten years or so , I've tried holding out for big antlers and have collected a few nice ones . The last two seasons ('04 and '05 ) I didn't shoot anything cause I didn't see any antlers bigger than what I already have . I don't have a real need to shoot just anything ...almost as much fun just watching them .
I saw a lot of bucks up to 8 and 10 points but held out for Mr. Big...ended the season without shooting anything ...but that's OK I've shot a lot of deer in my time .
For moose I'll shoot whatever I see first of whatever I have a tag for .

Got to admit that I like deer meat but can't make a steady diet out of it. Between my son and I we got three deer in 04 and still have enough steaks and sausage for 05 so why shoot just anything.
This year between him and me we passed up alot of animals looking for the wall hanger.

I'm a confirmed meat hunter.
I have been known to pass up "decent" bucks in favor of a big doe.
The first legal aniaml I see of any size usually gets it,
Then I go bird hunting, and just keep shooting targets!

Across the country whitetail deer are exploding and many areas now offer multiple tags and multiple does-only tags. Hunters should all take some time to do some deer-management research for the areas that they hunt.
If you are lucky enough to live in an area of high deer numbers and have property that you hunt regularly it behooves us to practice sound management. I am not saying you should pass on a trophy... but if you purchase three doe tags you should try to fill them, they are offered for that reason!

totaly agree with BigreD... Whitetails need to be culled somewhat in my area.
Since the landowner who gives me permission to hunt on is property looses a lot of money due to deer grazing his carrots, I aim on does. The owner wants me to get the does... So I'm a meat guy I guess.
This year, the doe was followed by a 7 pointer... Down he went. A nice set of antlers to me is a valued bonus but I hunt there with a job to do.

Very good point BIGREDD. I'm another one who needs a "nether" option.
I hunt because I love to hunt. Any meat or trophy I get from it is a bonus.
However, if a large bodied deer with a poor rack, and a smaller deer with a big rack jumped up at the same time, I'd probably shoot the tropy buck FIRST.

Meat mostly. Looove the meat
No anti-biotics. no steroids. less fat. Less harmfull to the environment than farming. Tastes awesome. And the added satisfaction of doing it yourself.

Good Point Foxer... I also like to take an ACTIVE ROLE IN MY MEAT CONSUMPTION
Around here, we call ourselves TROPHY MEAT HUNTERS
We love the meat and depend on filling the freezer with it every year. We only take does when our properties need some to be taken off. We never shoot young bucks anymore so more often than not, our freezer is full of meat from mature bucks.
I hear all kinds of talk about mature bucks not tasting good ... blah blah blah. Many years that's all we eat and they are fantastic. With that said, I hunt agricultural deer. So our bucks are grain, corn and hay fed.
We hunt for the biggest bucks in our herd and nothing else. When the doe numbers look like they are getting a little high, we thin them out.
Someone mentioned early season buck hunting and when November rolls around they start shooting does. May I suggest you reverse that habit. Shoot your does early, and do nothing but buck hunt during the rut. You'll be amazed at what you can learn watching does and immature bucks during the rut while waiting for Mr. Big.

neither (or maybe both). i've shot a few does, a lot of little bucks, and a few medium sized bucks (big for my area but average for alberta). i've also turned down quite a few shots at nice bucks in alberta looking for one of the big boys.
the area that i live in has lots of basket racked whitetail bucks but not much with any size. there are a lot of nice muleys, 4 point minimum though. turned down quite a few legal bucks (at least 10 this year) hoping for a monster or one with some extra "junk" on it's rack.
usually i shot a whitetail buck (or a doe if i get LEH) at home for the freezer, then do a trip or two to alberta looking for a monster whitetail. then come november i look for a big muley around home.
go for sheep too, a full curl ram pretty much defines trophy hunting. if i ever getting one i will eat it.

Fills the freezer, feeds the two growing boys.
