MeatEater 8

i think Rinella does a pretty good job of balancing of all around hunting, without needing to plug for the sponsors every five minutes. kudos to him

Or, as some Canadian shows would put it: "I couldn't have bagged these three woodcock without my $20,000 Yamaha side-by-side!"

I don't blame them
They have to make a living. But it looks silly.

it pushed me away from watching those yahoos all together, it wasn’t till i saw meateaters, and that’s about two three years after last time i saw canada in the wild or sum such, that i got back to watching other people hunt

I used to love some of the stuff Kristoffer Clausen put up on YouTube, but his video clips seem to have gotten far more boring.

Squirrel hunting is awesome! Great way to get a beginner hooked. Way less boring than deer hunting. I like that he is bringing new hunters out again, good to see they are encouraging women to hunt as well. We all should be introducing 1 person to hunting, either with a bow or a gun, hunting is hunting.

I wish we had squirrels to hunt in these parts! It would make getting the kids out so much easier, deer hunting in the coastal mountains is far from the ideal introduction for the wee ones. I'm getting into waterfowl this year, that feels a bit more approachable as long as the kids can stay warm enough...

Love Meateater. half way through season 8. Also check out their podcast, can't get enough of it.

My only complaint about the podcast is that it kinda ruins the show. I already know what's going to happen in every episode because their hunts get discussed on the podcast months before the show drops. That said I'll take 2 hours of podcast every week over a dozen 22 minute episodes once a year, so I'm still going to keep listening in each week.

I took my daughter to the range, then pheasant hunting ( game farm) this year was waterfowl ( goose hunt ) she is a hunter now. She loved the goose hunt, got compliments on her shooting from the other 5 guys

My only real issue with the show is the constant emphasis on bowhunting, and the weird obsession with squirrel hunting.

I foresee a time when bow hunting is used a serious wedge against the hunting community. And squirrel hunting, really? I mean, I'm sure they're fun and all that, but they talk about them an awful lot.

I think there have been three or four archery hunts in the entire series. I don't think bowhunting will ever be a wedge against rifle hunting. I would guess that the vast majority of people that hunt with a bow also hunt with a rifle. And if you like days in the field, small game gives you the most opportunity. Cheap way to get into hunting and cheap to engage in. It's the perfect "gateway drug".

The affiliated podcasts usually cover the surrounding events rather than the actual hunt, they usually give colour if you will to the episodes rather than acting as spoilers. They also come out like a year or more ahead of time. So if they're ruining episodes you either have a mind like a steel trap of you're exagerating the overlap.

While I have no problem with bow hunting and I like the idea that he's showing hunting of game that isn't normally considered to be game by many. I just don't like the fact he's got my friends obsessed with hunting squirrels now, and to be honest I find zero fun in this. The 65 acres I have available is filled with them and they are welcome to take as many as they want but you literally sit there and 10 squirrels will run by you in the span of 20 mins, and the amount of meat off them is so small. It's just not a challenge and I can't find worth in the amount I get off them so ya kinda pissed he's got my friends obsessed with it but hey to each their own. I also don't like shooting up into the tree's so much considering their is inhabited areas all around the land we use, who knows where that 22lr will come down. Boring game and not worth it IMO.

I've only watched the first few episodes of this season, but they've talked about Steve missing with his bow on the sika deer and the meat loss on the elk a few times each on the podcast. Maybe it's just those two episodes that feel like I already know what's going to happen? I dunno, time will tell.

I've also listened to most of the podcasts multiple times, as I work an office job and I listen to podcasts all day while working. I've noticed that after a few months they're as good as the first listen because they're full of so much information and I'm never super focused on the podcast if I'm at work so I miss little bits and pieces on my first go.

"Boring game and not worth it IMO." Think I found the wedge

I wouldnt call it a wedge people like hunting different things. But where im from I had never heard of eating squirrel till the meat eater crew. And no one i knew had even thought it a thing to do outside removing pests. And bring it up in conversation and everyone will lool at you funny. So ya its not worth it imo. I can go for the other stuff like birds and deer coyotes. Leave the furry rree rats for my friends.

Are they red squirrels?

Haven't bothered with the ones you have to trap, that's an extra step for an animal I'm not interested in. But yes there are red and black squirrels on the lot..

Are they red squirrels?

Can’t be because he is in Ontario and they are protected. So I don’t get his statement. Plenty of the best game meat ever on a grey squirrel. When I cook them for a group I plan on one per person and there is always leftovers

Love squirrel hunting and love eating them. To each their own but I think you should join your buddies more and see why they enjoy it
