Hey Gang,

Looking for some input here. I am in the market for a med to long range rifle, or 300 - 800 yrds for target shooting. Ideally in the 'Combloc' 7.62 size. I have tried an SKS and I do like it, but is there anything else out there?

Pics, price, etc would all be great.

Now...I just have to find my old Sportco...

7.62X39 REALLY isn't the best choice for a 'long-range' rifle - any particular reason you're specifying this caliber? Lots of better options out there...

Mostly for the price. Going out to the range, as you all know can get very expensive. I am really hoping to get back into competetive target shooting next year which will be 7.62 nato, so to have a cheap round to practice with would be ideal.

Unless you want to hand load for it, you are going to be disappointed with the 762 39s accuracy, not as cheap but a better option would be something in 223/556...

or,,, if you want to stick Combloc try 7.62x54R and check out Mosin-Nagant bolt actions or SVT40 semi autos.
Mosin Nagants can be had pretty cheap, what you save on the rifle you can make up for in ammo.
SVT40s will run anywhere from $350-500.

So get your rifle in 7.62x51 and reload for it. If you are going to be competition shooting you will need to reload anyway. If you simply want cheap practice, get a quality rimfire rifle and shoot out to 200yds. It is close to shooting a .308 out to 800yds and excellent practice for technique for less than 7.62x39 costs.

X's 2. There are a lot of inexpensive Remington 700's in .308 out there that would fill your requirements nicely. Buying one rifle to get ready to shoot with another one is going to cost you in the long run. You don't have to put out a lot of money for an accurate .308. I am not a Savage fan but they do have an inexpensive but accurate .308 platform as well. Personally I would stick with Remington but check them all out (in .308). And, as said above, start reloading for it. :D

I am gonna make some dealer really happy...already have my eyes on a 870, and a 597 VTR, and now a you're rec. a 700...I'll be putting someone's kids through college.

I have looked into the 700 range, but from what I can see, there are so many, maybe too many platforms that it get's a bit confusing. Add to that, all of the reviews on each...

Any good 700 ideas to start looking into?

Sorry...I also prefer iron sights...so where do I start looking?

If you want to shoot a precision rifle to 800y with iron sights, look for a used target rifle. Type shot in DCRA/ORA TR competition. You should be able to get one, with sights, for about the same cost as a new Remington, less scope.

That's where (ORA/DCRA) I used to shoot, and am slowly trying to back to. Maybe this thread could be moved or deleted as it seems I have gotten some advice that I need to look into.

Thanks guys.

Basically what I came in here to say.
Get a trainer rifle in .22 and use that if you want cheap practice.

I regularly shoot my SKS out to 1.5 KM with Iron sights. No biggie. Usually a 1 inch hole. All touching. If I want real accuracy I'd bring out my Norc 7.62 x 39 bolt action. 2 km - I get one hole (FOR REALSIES ;)
(BUT SRS. Norc JW - random numbers; its a bolt action in that caliber. try that)

So, to be clear....you are saying that you regularly shoot your military surplus SKS (7.62x39) out to 1.5km (1500 meters....to be clear) and get a 1 inch group?

The 7.62x39mm Cartridge was not designed as a long range cartridge for competitive shooting. But if you throw enough cash into it, you will turn your Rambo wanna be carbine from a Sow's ear into a silk purse !Laugh2Laugh2Laugh2

NOT !!!!!!!
