Mentoring

After many years of pondering I’ve finally decided to take the plunge and start hunting. I put in for deer tags and I’ll be hunting small game as well. I don’t come from a hunting family so it’ll all be totally new to me. If anyone within an hour or two of Bancroft is willing to show me the ropes that would be fantastic. Otherwise I’ll be teaching myself. Wish me luck!

Starting small game hunting, primarily rabbit, in the Ottawa area. I would appreciate any tips especially regarding to this area.

It's certainly not quite the easiest thing to get into without the guidance of experienced hunters. Thanks!

If you're up for walking some public land for rabbit this winter in the Ottawa area I'd be happy to join.

Is anyone in the Southern Ontario area open to helping me learn how to hunt waterfowl? I've got a guided hunt booked for October but I'd love to get outside and learn from as many people as I can. It would be much appreciated. Thank you!!

I just got my hunting licence this year so hunting is brand new to me.

I am currently outfitting myself to go deer hunting on Vancouver Island this fall. I've got good glass, a nice GPS unit and the right gun..... I also picked up the back roads book and I've done a ton of reading. What I dont have is the first clue of where to go specifically, what to look for and so on. As it stands, I plan on heading up the forestry roads around the Nanaimo Lakes area and just seeing what I can. Plan on scouting here in a couple weeks.

If there is anyone around the Nanaimo area (or anywhere on the island really) who wouldn't mind showing me the ropes I would be forever grateful.

I am particularly interested in ground hunting (dont like the idea of sitting in a tree stand). I also want to try and figure some good spots to set up a hunting camp next season. This is more of a bonding exercise with my young fella... The island is so confusing though with so little crown land and so much managed forest.

Anyway, thanks in advance to any kind should willing to lend their expertise.

Hey all I have found some people to hunt with through this sticky before so thought I'd give it another shot. We are in Toronto but can travel a bit, my gf just got her hunting license and is doing her pal this weekend. She is a pretty new shooter but I have taken her to shoot some trap and figured maybe a dove hunt or something like that would be a great place to start. I have never been dove hunting and don't know where to start so was hoping somebody could help us out, or really any kind of hunting that you wouldn't mind a new hunter joining us. I have been hunting for a few years but limited experience mainly waterfowl. If maybe you are a female hunter or you wife hunts with you might be a great fit as well but could go out with a group of guys as well she's not bothered by that either. I appreciate any and all help. Thanks

Hey everyone. Thinking about getting into some hunting, probably duck and deer. Located in New Brunswick Fredericton area. Just wondering if anyone is willing to show me the ropes. Thanks!!

Hey folks I just bought an off grid home up in Magnetawan Ontario. Surrounded by crown land for miles and miles. I’m a somewhat new hunter, killed a couple yote protecting livestock at my old place. And enjoyed rabbit on a bun a couple times.

Looking for an experienced person or group to hunt with in my local area, I want to get a bucks this season and perhaps a moose in a party hunt. I move in October. I’ll be on 13 acres so cold beer around the fire on a regular basis!

Thanks

Hey, I'm located in the Fraser Valley, and I'm gearing up for some waterfowl hunting. Basic duck call is decent, would probably scare away geese at this point hahaha. More than willing to do work on a hunt. Have a dozen FLD mallard floating decoys. Feel free to message me with any tips or whatever mentorship you want!

Hey guys, looking to be mentored in the Winnipeg/Southern MB area. Come from a non hunting family but I've been shooting since I was a kid. I have a 1 year old boy at home that I would absolutely love to pass this tradition down too but I don't know where to start. I'm going to try going out for some grouse in the next couple weeks but looking to be mentored in deer hunting mostly, but absolutely open to any and all guidance. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi everyone! I'm a young guy looking to take up game bird hunting and would love someone to show me the ropes. I'm a safe and respectful shooter who wouldn't have an issue hunting over a dog if you have one. I'm located in Edmonton, and would love to join if you're heading out for grouse, pheasant, etc. Give me a shout :)

Hey I am living in Niagara Ontario and interested in learning to hunt or even trapping. I am 25 and have no experience hunting, pretty quiet guy, willing to travel in Ontario and always looking to learn new skills.

Hey - Also from the Fraser Valley area and would be super interested in learning a few things. I actually dont even know where to start, but I would be down to grab a beer or something and discuss prior to making any plans. Drinks on me if anyone wants a mentee!

I’ve got a friend in Sechelt getting into firearms and hunting for the first time. I live in Alberta. Anyone around Sechelt willing to meet a friend of mine and be a local resource to learn from?
Please send me a PM if you can!

I searched the location in this thread and nothing came up yet

there are a few members here from the sunshine coast but not sure if they hunt or not.
Some good hunting for blacktail (mule) deer and black bear in that area but lots of local hunters and First Nations to compete with.
Unfortunately I have nothing to offer as far as hunting knowledge for that area but hopefully someone from the area sees the posts here and replies.

tell your friend to get up as high as he can , into the alpine at this time of year. Then hike the treeline and look for game trails.
Blacktails are creatures of habit and there will be well defined game trails leading down from the alpine. Once those trails are found , set up a few ground blind with natural items from the area at different elevations on the mountainside. In the fall the deer will begin to use those trails heavily and a would be hunter who does his homework in the off season will do well.

Hey everyone, i just got my PAL last november and all my hunting permits. I'm looking for an experienced hunter in Quebec (ideally not too far from Montreal) that wouldn't mind teaching a newbie about small game hunting this Fall. If anyone is up for it let me know. Je parle français aussi !
