Mentoring

Well, I'm looking for someone to take me for my first deer. We still have a little time left!

On the flip side, I've taken a lot of grouse and would be more that happy to share some spots with a newbie bird hunter.

Im in he Kelowna BC area, but will travel!

Cheer all

Why don't those people looking for or to mentor just put it in our sig lines? It would be about the easiest way without trying to search through a sticky to find one. Just a thought......

EDIT: Our deer camp is kinda full now. I'm looking (have several leads) to lease a spot or two for deer and yotes in the WMU 65 area. If a few guys want to get together and START a new camp, just PM me. I'm getting tired of all the arguing between the older and younger guys and looking for a new start. I've been hunting since '88 and can gut and field dress almost anything out there, (never done bear). Haven't gone out for ducks and geese since the lead ban. I have enough junk (as the wife calls it) to outfit 3 more guys and supply at least half the camp.

I wouldn't mind getting out for some yote hunting now that deer is over. I am a newbie (gone out a few times for bear / deer but yet to get anything) Any one in lower mainland or near by feel free to PM me.

This tool is so under used.

This is the best way to tap into hunting and shooting and who wants to do it.
All within your local gun club area.

I am in under the Fort Murray club.
I just bought a new fox pro E caller for coyotes and am looking for some partners.:)

I am going to be getting my hunter safety course at the end of Feb and I was actually thinking about starting a new post looking for some people in Ontario that wouldn't mind taking me on a few hunts to show me the ropes.

If there is anyone please send me a PM!

Thanks,

I have encountered a number of mentoring sessions as a giver and receiver. My father was a .22 and shotgunner but never had a centrefire rifle. We were well versed in safety but he frowned on us acquiring any thing more than .22's and a shotgun. Once I obtained my .30-06, I was mentored by friends and the local Game warden. It was probably 1o years before I mentored my first student, and it was an experience that I did not wish to repeat. The second one was not much better so was it me or them. Most important is to have a student that follows direction and secondly, the process should not begin in the field but at the range. When I started hunting with my son, I knew he could shoot accurately and he listened. It is one thing to help someone along who is willing and quite another to coach another whose values are vastly different than yours. I would be quite comfortable mentoring someone I got to know through the range, than someone who happens to be a clingon. There are so many opportunities but I want only those that share my ethics. I want to mentor someone who is looking for the experience I have gained. After two bad experiences I now think I can pick the ones I want, and I will not volunteer until a relationship has been establish. Having heard bad experiences from others I don't think I have to accept the first one who just wants to go hunting but is committed to hunting.

Hey, let's not forget good ol' Saskatchewan. I've been shooting/hunting for about 20 years. I've mentored a few guys from work (+associates) int the past few years during deer season, with great success!! Turned a nervous, shy 14 yr old into an avid hunter and shooter, (with help from friends) Also went grouse hunting, with little success, but everyone enjoyed the day and still came back.
I am 1 hr from Yorkton and 1 1/2 hrs from Regina. Let me know if you want to come out shooting/hunting. Be glad to have you.

How does someone get a group started? I live in Southwestern Ontario and would like to start a group for my region.

:agree: Though I'm not sure I would have emphasized it as such (with the humongo letters) :D I'd like a group started for the GTA and surrounding area please! (I wouldn't be a mentor of course... but I'd be looking for one!)

It's a good Idea but we are all spread out all over the country. That makes it hard to get guys together also its amazing the number of people that no longer hunt.

cdnchick and others, I live in the GTA and would like to get a group together, I've only been out hunting rabbit once with my father so i dont have a lot of experience but can contribute a bit of skinning and field dressing skills.

hi, count me in too---i am in brampton---would love to be part of a group----ideally pheasant/grouse/game birds

im also a toronto boy, looking to get out as much as possible next season. my main focus will be waterfowl but would also love to get some larger game.

I'm an experienced hunter - should I say mentor? - living in the GTA.
Anyone interested in joining our new moose hunting group, please PM me A.S.A.P.
Also, I hunt other big game, small game, varmint, etc.

This would be a great opportunity to teach new people. There must be someone out there who could show a newbie the ropes

Just a suggestion but you could try looking up local groups such as Delta Waterfowl . their whole goal is to get as many people out hunting properly as possible . here on pei , we mentor youth and am planning our first ladies hunt this year . i was goose hunting in the ottawa area last fall and guys i gotta tell you , the waterfowling there is awesome at least the three days i was there it was . check out www.deltawaterfowl.org , look for local chapters and drop them a line . never know , you may get a new hunting buddy .

just my .02
