Merry Christmas to me!

It appears to be a reinforcement. I can't find signs of a crack anywhere. I've looked with a magnifying glass and can't see a hairline.

Let us know if you figure one out, I'm sure it's doable but I couldn't think of a simple way without d&t'ing mine. If you were going to make the deflector you probably will have more mounting options. I wonder if the sks deflector that attaches to the rear sight leaf would fit the svt as well?

Although if your svt is able to function on a lower gas setting you likely won't need one, I'm looking for a scope that's short enough in length that will still allow the use of stripper clips but has some magnification for my other svt. I had a 3.5 fixed power on it that was short enough to allow strippers which and was no where near the eject path, I just found it didn't have enough magnification so it went on my sks.

I think I just had either an epiphany or a brain fart on a design. I'll see if I can make it work. Then, we can decide which it was. Going out to the farm shop after supper.
 
I've started making parts for the deflector. I think this just may work. As long as it don't rattle off.

Boy, is it ever slow going filing small amounts, then checking, then filing. I'm gonna have to buy a small drill press for the holes.
 
With how I'm designing it, I think I'd be able to make a hinged design and have it still be able to use stripper clips for those that have a short scope or red dot that doesn't stick too far forward. At least that way the flying brass can be managed allowing quicker range cleanups.

Just gonna concentrate on the prototype first.

I should add, this deflector I'm attempting, is not going to alter the rifle in any permanent way. With quick 1 min install/removal. And no drilling.
 
Bit of an update:

Have the mount completed. Just need to make the deflector parts. Just to give a bit of a hint to where I'm mounting it, the nice handy slab of metal that has year and plant stamped into it has pretty grooves in the sides. Great for a hard mount that clamps into the grooves.

Nice, I had not noticed that grooving there!
