Mexican carry - what pistols are safe for this CCW method?

You guys are joking right?

Nope. Pretty serious. Colt and Walther both made automatic pocket pistols designed to be carried this way. Engaging the saftey blocks the trigger and the firing pin. The difference between a vest pocket and waistband in terms of muzzle direction is neglibible.

Google the Colt Hamerless 1903 in .25ACP or .380ACP. Note, the Colt Hammer 1903 could NOT be carried this way....diffent pistol entirely. There was also the Colt Vest Pocket of 1908; recently reviewed in Guns and Ammo.

And then there is the Walther PP and PP/k. The TT33 was designed to be carried on half #### with a loaded round in the chamber.

All old designs, pre-dating anything "modern" but available to a 12.6 holder.

Its not something I would do, but I'm not in an environment where I have to carry....RFN.

Any DA revolver would be OK with hammer down on an empty chamber IMO.

Still, an IWB holster would be much much better, or a gun purse of some kind.

In the case of a 1911 I believe the risk would be of loosing the gun rather than an accidental discharge, provided the grip safety has not been pinned. My preference would be the behind the hip carry for two reasons. First off, cross draw is handing the gun to the bad guy if you get into a scuffle, and secondly the gun does not stay in place when in the front as well as it does behind the hip.

As mentioned above, a simple rig can be fashion out of para-cord or sideline, but should you have reason to use the gun, it might be necessary to hide it as quickly as you made it appear, and a side-line holster is not particularly quick for reholstering the gun to because it doesn't hold it's shape.

I am curious though why you would be able to have access to a firearm and not a holster. If you are off to the sand box, get one before you leave.

How soon we forget falsetto and castrati singers. What do I mean? None for me, thanks! We haven't even covered the subject of weight loss. Here is what happened to me, using mexican carry, after losing some weight. When I got out of my car the pistol slid right down my left leg and landed on the asphalt. The pistol didn't fire but it scared the hell out of me. Regards, Richard:D

What common pistols are safe to carry in your waistband without a holster with a round chambered and their safeties (if present) on?

I have read that 1911's should not be Mexican carried but with the grip safety they would be safe even if in condition 1 wouldn't they?

This is in case I need to legally carry in another country and can't source a holster.

A member of the sydenham club in owen sound died by doing this... he carried his pistol while checking his target...shot himself in the leg through the femoral artery even with a cell phone call to 911 he bled out before help could arrive.....

I would advise against.....

True untill you begin your draw stroke. If the saftey gets knocked of in your waistband, you;ve got a cocked gun as you grab it, or attempt to "re-holster"

Maybe some sort of revolver? Personally, I'd pocket carry before mexican carry....

The only way I would Mexican carry would be revolver, empty chamber under the hammer. Until they perfect ##### transplants, I would NOT do a condition 1 carry with a 1911.

BUY A FU*KING HOLSTER AND QUIT BEING SO FU*KING CHEAP. Or, if you "must" carry, employ the options as layed out by Redleg. The "what if" case of having to carry mexican, or not carrying at all is of no merit. Obviously under adverse conditions people will do some crazy #### in order to preserve their life or perhaps the lives of others. Often, their actions are not safe nor recommended.

I guess if I had to, I would chew off my own limb to survive, but that isn't the topic of discussion.

As long as we remember to keep our fingers out of the trigger guard until the target is acquired, no harm - no foul, but I agree that the arrangement leaves much to be desired for the cost of a $60.00 holster.

yes, but when your gropping in your shorts for your piece, accidents happen because the thing will be moving around, not restrained by a holster, and shoving it back into your waist band is a vasectomy waiting to happen.....:runaway:

So, would you be having to acquire this firearm in said country? buy yerself a gal-dang uncle mikes before you go if you have to. one of those concealed fanny packs if need be. there's absolutely no reason to have to be without a means of safely carrying. What kind of trouble are you getting yourself into if you have to carry in some foreign country? find a different vacation spot or go prepared.

frankly there are so many "universal" holsters out there that can be adjusted to fit any gun why not take one of those with you, while they are not optimal for every gun they are satisfactory for most.

I would get something similar to a yaqui slide as they look like a cell phone holder if the gun is not in it so may be used and kept on the pants with or without the gun present.

or checkout the safariland universal fit holster.... looks like a pouch and has multiple tension screws to get the fit right.

You could even use one of the old style canvas covered military holsters and "modify" it a bit for quicker removal. Not pretty but it would work depending on the gun. Working in the field it would also give the gun a bit more protection from the elements. Some of the older guns mentioned in the previous posts don't take kindly to dust and dirt.

It depends on what the guys coming at you have, and how fast you really need to get at your gun.
