A MP.net member, Dragunov, actually went to Mexican military website and ask about the ''Xiuhcoatl'':

Dragunov said:
I requested information about the rifle through the information for the public section in the armys website and this is what i got:

1 -The rifle will be produced under the license of HK?
No, since the rifle is a national development.

2-General/technical information about the rifle?:
All they said was that the rifles operational system was SEMI and FULL. Caliber 5.56x45 mm fmj ss109. The rest was considered secret.

3-When will it be oficially presented to the public?
The next 16th of September during the militay parade.

Here's some info about this weapon by another MP.net member:

The Mexican design of the weapon includes telescopic and mechanical sight, tube forged in cold; folding and adjustable butt, as well as a two way shot selector. The waepon is a 5.56 x 45 mm caliber, and can shot from 700 to 750 bullets per minute. The cartridges in plastic material of high durability reduce the possibility that the bullets are obstructed. Also cartridges are able to hold 30 bullets, and it has short and long range fire power

Mexican goverment, asked several weapon factories, for a smaller, lighter, and 5.56 x 45 mm caliber. H&K asked 93 million s of euros for develop, and make the weapon, or 63 millions, for machinery and technology transfer. So mexicano goverments choosed the second option. They develop the weapon, and with the tools bought to H&K the weapon is make in Mexico.

Here's group of pics, probably taken during the Sept.16 parade:

HK should sue.

Mexico is probably like many other countries in the world that don't believe in copyrights or anything like them. Do you think Colt is getting money from China for their AR15 copies?

Not like the patents dont exist anymore for the AR15...

Mexico has an army? Fighting against what? :p

Americans, they want Texas back ;)

Actually, HK found out that the cost of labor was cheaper in Mexico and will be moving their plant from the US down south. Something about "Free Trade". So what you are looking at is the North American versions of the G36.
Sadly, they are just avaliable to Military or Law Enforcement. Future plans are to make a single shot, manually loading and cycling version for the Canadian market.

The see through magazines are a pretty neat idea, but they'd be useless here. They would always look empty with only 5 rounds in them.

According to the article they paid for the machinery and technology transfer. So H&K got their shillings. As to Colt getting money from China, do you think Colt is getting royalties from Dlask Canada?

Likely a good idea for Mexico to build them in house. I suspect the labour is much cheaper there than in Europe.

I don't think so........

The only thing we know so far ( Mexican military enthusiasts) is that this rifle was based on the German G36, the original plan of the army was to built the G36 with the license of HK, however somehow they didn't get to a deal, therefore the Mexican engineers had to create the Mexican version with the same machinnery the G36 is built with.

There is no official technical data available at the moment, some sources say its caliber is 5.56. And it doesn't have carry handle at all. It also doesn't have an optic scope, instead, it has iron sights. Anyway this is not official data so lets not believe everything.

As far as I know, we don't have to pay for a license because the FX-05 is not of HK design.

However we do pay for the license of the MP5s. HK21s, G3s and HKP7 pistols.

About the name "Xiuhcoatl":

I did some research on the meaning of "Xiuhcoatl" in the old Nahuatl language. I find it to be a very dignified name. It comes from ##### mithology, and it means "fire serpent", but not just any fire serpent, the "Xiuhcoatl" was the weapon of choice of "Huitziloptchli", the #####'s main deity, the "god of war", also represented by the Sun. He used it to defeat his older sister, the Moon, and her minions the stars, after they killed his mother while he was still in her womb. A badass name if you ask me.

At least they are modernizing and not using well used AKs, M16A1s or FALs like most third world armies. Reports of performance and reliability will come out in good time. It sure looks nice though.

However I think we can forget about getting the semi-auto versions up here for many reasons which I don't know or understand.

I'd buy one. That fixed sight radius is ridiculously short though. If Colt can have Anaconda, the Mex can have an Xiuhcoatl serpent.

Re HK: I'm sure HK got lots of money out of Mexico over the last few decades.

All those mexicans being forced to return to Mexico...
All them mexican army being issued new rifles...
I think somebody doesn't want uncle Javier and Aunt Esmerlada back in Mexico...

What's wrong with mexican quality?

Any of you drive a VW? How about a chevy avalanche or suburban....

or a dodge ram truck or a PT cruiser.....

So if the materials used in the production of the gun are good I am sure it would be a fun gun.
