mid power mil scope options

reading through 30 pages of the optics forum and try various searches still has me try to narrow down scope options and only slightly closer to finding something to fit my bill.

trying to find something in the 1000$ range that provides mil/mil reticle/turrets . to go on a built up rem 700

going to be a bit of a general purpose scope, using it on the range and for some light competition stuff (I'm more interested in the tactical/precision rifle type competitions which dont seem to carry large magnification type scopes) but also would be used for the occasional hunting trip with my dad.

because of that I'm not looking for something huge or super magnification, but thought I'd stick in the 3-10x range or maybe 3-15x with a 40mm objective (some are up to 50mm objective like the weaver tactical 3-15)

I know a tactical type scope is going to be a bit heavy for hunting, but if I'm looking for a general purpose scope I know there are going to be compromises, and I'm okay with a bit of extra weight while I carry.

I like the look of a few tactical series scopes that look like they fall in my range, but dont come in mil/mil options.

any recommendations for something like that, or is my price range harder to find a mil/mil option?
 
I bought my 4-14x falcon menace with metric turrets, and 1/2 mil marks on the reticle for around $400. Metric/Metric is amazing, I would find it hard to go back to anything else. The scope works fine, and is repeatable as far as I can tell. I know that's a bit under your price range.

Those on these forums in the NF or SB class of scopes don't think very highly of them (obviously a much cheaper product), but I bought mine after reading positive reviews on sniper central. My shooting buddy has a $1200 Zeiss scope, and I personally can't tell the difference in clarity etc when looking through the two side by side, FWIW. I would recommend it as a decent starting point for coyote hunting etc.
 
I would suggest looking at Leupold MK4 series or Nightforce.................

Don't scrimp and cheap out when buying optics............buy the best scope your budget allows............you can always upgrade...............not many people want to blow $4000.00 on a top line S&B from the get go...................but if you can afford it, then you might as well buy the top line stuff........."buy quality, buy once"........:D

You might also want to look at Sightron................I haven't used one, but quite a few people here are raving about them as far as value for what you get...........

In the end, most of the top line scopes have been through Military trials and/or used by various military/law enforcement groups, so you know they will take a beating and keep on functioning ........;)
 
I have to second the Zeiss choice, I have a 4.5-14X50 with mil dot and target turret. It has 68" of vertical adjustment which is enough for my short action round that i do not require an angled base. If you shop you can find it for just under the $1000. When I purchased I compared to equal Leupold and Burris models. The clarity difference was amazing, the choice was easy at that point. In low light conditions it is also amazing. You don't need to spend thousands to get great quality scopes. message me and i can line you up with a distributor with excellent prices on ALL top brands.

One thing people don't realize with cheaper optics, is long term eye strain. Spend a few days working with really good optics vs not too bad optics, and see what your eyes and your head feel like. Probably no big deal for the guy who pops a couple of deer every year, but log some hours on them and you will discover the difference. Now convincing the wife why you spent "How Much on a bloody scope?!?" is another ball of wax.....still working on a better sales pitch:)
 
I'm not against spending for quality, and I also get that a cheap scope isnt going to have the same optical clarity, but I have to imagine there are some decent scopes in the 1000$ range even up to 1500 with what I'm looking for. something like a nightforce is going to be 2000+ easy
 
A 3.5-10x Mark 4 Leupold will set you back around $1400-$1500. That's where I would start if I was building again. When I did my 308 (about 6 years ago) I put a 3.5-15x NXS on a Savage LE2B and was happy as hell with it. But the ability to go MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA would have been better. I'm a tad smarter now than I was 6 years ago...as evidenced by my choice of rifles, scopes and women. :D
 
You can also find great deals on mid to high end scopes in the Exchange Forums.................just have to be patient, and ready to jump on a deal as soon as you see it..........
 
the mk4 leupolds are way above my initial posted price, but they might be doable if I really stretch it. I'd love to go nightforce, but it would be almost 3 by the time the dust settled.

leupod mk4 3.5-10x40mm m5 turrets - front focal - $1920

nightforce - 3.5-15 x 50 F1 $2750

That much for an FFP scope? Ditch that requirement and the price will be lower. Did you get pricing from ATRS, P&D or Hirsch Precision (all members and sponsors)? $2750 seems sky high to me.

Yea......I seem to remember NightForce pricing being more reasonable.............I looked at NightForce before I bought my S&B, and I remember being able to pick a 5 to 15X for around $1500.00 to $1800.00.......

I just checked TSE's price on the Nightforce 3.5-15x50 NXS ........it starts at $1700.00 and goes up to $2700.00..............you don't need all the fancy bells and whistles............

Honestly, if you are getting into the $3000.00 price range I would go right to the S&B PM-II Series........
 
thats the trick with new things though isnt it. I'm I'm looking into the 1000 range I might as well bump up to the leupolds, and if your going leupolds you might as well fork out for the nightforce, and if its the nightforce front focal why wouldnt you just go for the S&B...

I compared the nightforce to the leupold because they both had front focal. I wanted the m5 turrets on the leu which comes with front focal, plus I like the idea of the mil's being useful in any zoom, the base leupolds are closer to 1500
 
yeah thats why my initial post had me asking about scopes that provide mil/mil options. I thought the leupolds were out until I saw they started offering mil turrets this year
 
They used to only offer 0.5mil clicks. That is way too big! Do they offer 0.1mil clicks now? Can't load their site on this system since it requires Flash...
 
Talk to Jerry @ Mystic Precision about Sightron. Got my Bigsky 4.5-14 w/side focus & mil dot for about $700 shipped. Fantastic scope. I use Burris Zee rings.
 
Do they offer a reticle that has hash marks 0.5 mil or finer and at least 8 mils worth of marks at the bottom end for hold-overs. The best they used to have was that TMR thing that didn't have enough vertical at the bottom...
 
A friend of mine just bought the Sightron 10-50x60 scope from Mystic for the money you are talking.

I looked through it and it is good. He is very pleased with it.
 
My NXS 5.5-22X56 was a hair under $2000. Its worth every penny, I am continually impressed with this scope. Hard pill to swallow, but I am glad I did.

I have a MIL/MIL setup, and I find it to be a little too coarse at times. 1/10 Mil is .343 MOA, which means you don't even get 3 clicks per MOA (actually 2.9 so close enough?). Something to think about. Coarse adjustments are meant for speed in battle conditions, the rest of us can take our time.
