Reading a "who shoots competitively" thread got me thinking(always a dangerous thing), there's no reason why we can't all shoot competitively for the cost of a few bullets,a target, a couple stamps and some time. In other words, a postal match(not shooting mailmen:eek: , more like mail in target practice). I don't know if this is the right forum for this, but us milsurp folks should have a CGN milsurp postal match. I'm thinking, rule wise, to keep this simple.

-100 yards, original iron sights only. No scoped rifles.

-Best 5 shot group(this way, any paper is a target, instead of trying to get everyone to use the same competition), with your name, CGN handle, and the gun and specifications(make, caliber, date, any other interesting facts about it), and you may enter one target per rifle. You can enter twice, but with 2 different rifles.

-Rifle must be true mil-surp made before 1955 (i.e. no norinco M14's or other commercial copies of original battle rifles). The spirit of this is Enfields, Mosins, Mausers, Carcano's, M1's, Ljungmans, SVT40's, Brens, 1919's, M2's etc.
-Everlasting glory for the overall winner, as well as "special" categories, like best grouping from an L.E., Mosin, etc

Anyone interested? Let's hear your suggestions!

I like it! Maybe post pics of the best groups? It would be fun to have a free for all with differant misurps instead of just a few types. It would be funny if a carcano got top honours!

online postal match! that's a great idea! a photo of the best group your milsurp can do posted on CGN...

For sure it has to be a milsurp free for all. I just don't think bubba's guns, or late model copies of great rifles should be allowed...but anything else that is milsurp and was made before, say 1955, should be allowed. That permits Mosins, all Mausers, Enfields, Carcano's, Mannlicher's, K31's, Ross', MP40s,a gennie WW2 SKS, etc. Even beltfed or drumfed MG's if you have one and can shoot it!

There was a thread in the youth forum about competitive shooting, and most don't because of money or time. I'd seen the idea on surplusrifle.com, and thought it would be a fun thing to do here. The way to do it is get everyone's opinion and ideas, lay out a format, pick a deadline and have a moderator sticky the info and results. So put up your ideas for rules and regs and I'll work on the rest.

Heres how ya do it (assuming everyone has a camera)

Picture of the gun with the target.

I would suggest maybe 3 seperate groups (Bench/prone/standing)

Koldt had the idea of creating a PDF target so everyone can print identical targets as well

How about a subforum for that purpose where there'd be monthly competition threads? How about two separate competitions for rimfire and centrefire with subdivisions for iron sights and scopes?

Yeah at least two classes, milsurp ammo & reload. I would love to use all milsurp but stuff like carcano & kropatschek is a bit hard to find.
That's kinda what I was thinking. Plus, I haven't started handloading yet, and some surplus ammo is hard (or simply impossible) to find, which leaves factory as my only choice. Some of the milsurp stuff has been drying up lately like the 6.5x55...
But, yeah, this sounds like fun. I'll be joining the range within a few weeks so count me in! ;)

Sounds like a plan. We should this as a monthly competition, with a dedicated forum. People will have to shoot regularly to defend their honour!
A little kick in the ass to get to the range more often, for sure! ;)
