Milsurp price insanity

I think it boils down to a few different things, in no particular order.

- Low supply.
- Steady, or slightly increasing demand (due to more collectors and people entering the hobby).
- Far fewer sources of collectibles, gun shows are mostly no longer running, etc.
- Higher prices state side push prices up here.
- Inflation.
- Covid, many people want cool toys to make them happy.

Also, quality is diminishing. It is getting more difficult to find higher quality items, and so when a nice collectible comes up, people are paying more than before.

Lastly, not many collectors in Canada use CGN, so most people do not have a website to buy, trade and sell. Their only options are the stores, auctions or word of mouth.

Hit the nail on the head with this one. Crazy how much prices have shot up in the last few years

Certainly would make a nice addition to the collection.

I saw a pallet of them and they had been used right up to the point they were barely functional.

The M95 is a tough action, very suitable for extreme conditions in the field and the Russians appreciated this. I've heard reports they weren't as accurate as their M91 rifles but were sought after, if they could be had. Most were just used up to the point they weren't worth refurbishing.

The rifles I saw at International were at best FAIR ONLY grade, other than a full crate that were still in the wrap and another box with them full of matching bayos. I have no idea where that crate of rifles went to. IMHO, they were smuggled with another shipment into the US, where they would fetch 20-30 times what they could get for them in Canada at the time.

Lever action rifles were very popular and sought after all through SE Asia, South America and even China.

Not many of them returned to North America.

Hi Gents. This poor owner must be suffering from too much isolation. Going on a fishing trip with excessive pricing seems to be the norm but his opinion is outer limits for sure. Being an old guy I find most of the auction prices excessive too. I wonder if I will see this Gew 98 at a Gun
Show soon. But I also thank this in a way as it brings the values of my items up. The downside is that it turns off most people's interest in a very rewarding hobby and retires it to greed and stupidity. If he sells it at that price his laugh is on all of us. Sucker born every minute. JOHN

I just paid 1000$ for an unfired Polish M44. There is nothing out there like that anymore. When I see it I have to buy.

When I started working at Milarm in 1997 they had a large rack of "unissued" M44's. They were listed at $150 but we had a hard time selling them as then there was little interest in many milsurps especially non domestic guns.. Supply and demand drives all prices. Phil.

There is value in vg++/mint condition guns
With what is happening in the World of Surplus, most of it being destroyed , US Military paying countries to destroy Lend Lease that they can't sell through CMP, there isn't going to be much available in the future
Re building from parts is getting very expensive and people don't appear willing to pay for the effort, finding good parts and correct assembly.
All military surplus is a creation of a series of military rebuilds in various countries, non matching numbers on numbered guns is your example
Parts are expensive and getting harder to find, sets of wood is even harder to find

I saw that one.

I have a Gew98 1917 sniper rifle with all matching numbers, that I put up on ####### a while ago. It is a very interesting historical piece, but the wood is terribly beat up. I had some bad advice on how much it was worth (I can’t actually remember what I asked for now), and combined with my own arrogance I thought it would sell…it didn’t of course, and I had several people message me telling me I was insane. It’s still sat in my safe now, and probably will be for a long time. Taught me a very valuable lesson on supply and demand, and pricing things reasonably!
