Milsurp price insanity

I'm just getting my feet wet in the milsurp world. I kind of fell into it accidentally. A buddy was selling off his hunting rifles and said "here, buy these too, I don't have any idea what they are". All I can say is wow. Crazy prices, so many variants, its boggling my mind. My head is only so big, some stuff I need to remember, some I can't forget though. I need to forget something to add more info in.

Among the hunting rifles I just obtained Ive picked up a AG42-B and a couple .303's that have yet to be identified. All seem to be complete and in good to excellent condition. Barrels are bright, stocks good. I just need to get photos so I can research what exactly I got myself into. One 303 won't release the mag (which looks cut down to 5/6 rounds to me), one has the longer 10 round mag. The AG42-B appears to be complete, has a mag (10?), no paperwork. Only downside I can see is a previous owner looks to have scribed the last few of his/her SIN in the metal. They all need to be wiped down, cleaned up some to get the years of closet dust out of them. To his credit, they were stored, as he called it "oiled", but decades of dust is now caked on. Each gun had a little baggie over the muzzle to keep anything from going down the barrel.

I need to get off my butt and research these and get them sold. I have no idea if Im sitting on $500 all combined, or $500 each., or more. AG42-B's seem to be listing on the EE for $1200-$1400, but with the SIN etched into the one I have I doubt I'd break $1000 for it, who knows, maybe Ill part it out and make more money on it, NFC.

When I started working at Milarm in 1997 they had a large rack of "unissued" M44's. They were listed at $150 but we had a hard time selling them as then there was little interest in many milsurps especially non domestic guns.. Supply and demand drives all prices. Phil.

I bought one from Milarm in 2000, it was still $150.

The biggest issue I see with milsurp collecting currently is the amount of forgeries and the unscrupulous people involved trying to profit from it.
It is really turning me off of it, and I've been dancing around it for 30+ years; I can't imagine what some younger people think.

The real things are hiding in safes and people are looking for representative rifles to shoot. They're willing to pay for such rifles in decent shootable condition.

As long as the seller is up front about the rifle and isn't deceiving the gullible, there's no issues with forgeries in my mind, as they're mostly made up of legitimate parts.

I don't agree with stamping the put together rifle, with new made or even real original stamps to enhance the value of the firearm.

The forgeries thing goes both ways.
I've literally had people tell me stuff like "my buddy is really knowledgable with x, and he tells me your rifle has been sporterized/refinished/is un-original, so I'll offer y" (insert ridiculous low ball offer here). I laugh those off, but I'm positive many widows or next of kin have been taken to the cleaners by similar b/s.

Supply and demand.

What is crazy is the idea that a price is crazy, whether low or high, when the seller and buyer have agreed that it is suitable.

I bought my first milsurp in 97 as a bear gun. Could not get a pump action shoty for under 300 dollars but I could get this semi auto in .06 that held 8 rnds in good condition for 149$ serviceable were 99$. I splurged and scraped enough to get good condition. Not really knowing what I had I carried that thing a thousand miles in the bush. Oil and clean like dad showed me. Picked up some en blocks, bandolears and a bayonet at gun shows just cause I could. Then a movie and a couple of mini series came out and I couldn't keep people from making offers. I still cant believe my 149$ rifle is worth 2500 to 3000$. Of course my Enfields have only doubled in price, and that's with the pig stickers. Who knew, I keep them and enjoy them. The kids would kill me if I sold them.

Some little birdy told me you could buy Lee Enfield battle spec rifles for less than $200 now look at the price, even now the ishapore rifles are in high demand especially the 7.62 spec, on ####### I'm seeing No4 mk1 battle spec rifles being sold upto $1500.

That serial number etched into your AG42 may not be the work of bubba - pretty sure they came that way out of the factory
