like the title says im wondering if there is a specific minimum caliber required for hunting coyote and fox?

a couple buddies of mine never hunt coyote or fox with anything bigger than their .22s (non magnum .22)

Totally depends on the distances they shoot. With a 100 yard plus shot with a .22, it depends on placement . I would never shoot with anything less than a centerfire after that distance.....chances of wounding are too great. Lots brag on using a .22 or .17 but how many critters ran that we do not know about, thinking it was a miss? Think "ethical".

so a .223 is probably a safer bet...spend the little extra, have another "horse" in the stable, and be asured that your placed shots will put the animal down.

now if only some one would make up some fake legal document to sent me stating the minimum legal caliber is .223 then i can pleade my case to the wifey :ang3

I would rather 'think ethical' about my shot choice and placement before the calibre I'm using.

22lr at less then 50 yards works acceptably. A 22 mag out to 100 yards is what I usually carry, with my 7mm rem mag when they don't want to come close. Though the sound a 420 grain at 1850 fps from the guide gun is still my favorite.

22 Hornet works well on Fox, and I would assume it would be fine under 75 yards for Coyote as well, but have not had the chance with it to find out.

Typically though, I'd say 223 should be an ethical minimum for Coyote.

thanks guys...

i have only taken one coyote and it was with my trusty savage .22 but it was at roughly 25 yards, i hit him H&L and he didnt drop imediately so i had to "finish" him off, after that experience i decided i wanted to get something higher powered that would drop them faster..

i think im going to ponder over a remington 700 .223

what are your thoughts on 17 hornet for coyotes?

I think that the .22 Hornet would be min. and then limit the distance, but a case can be made for the guy with the 45/70 guide gun and the 420 grainers, remember what Rourke said "use enough gun".

SksA1, seeing as your in Alberta you could consider bumping your choice up to a .243 so you could also use the rifle for big game hunting if you wished, dogs are going to get blown up more though if your intention is to sell the fur. If you are not going to salvage the fur, which you do not have to on private land in Alberta, this might be the way to go.
You do have to salvage the fur taken on Alberta public lands.

If you’re just looking for a separate coyote specific rifle then I would simply get a .223 or 22-250 (IMO).

I would hate to make Mr. Wile E Coyote suffer anymore than he had to. I bought a .223, a quality scope and will personally sight it in before I even think about shooting a living thing.

Shooting an animal with a round that won't kill, only injure it is a sin (not a religious person). Ethically, as outdoors-men or women, I think we are bound to the idea of a clean kill.

Respect for your prey and the environment is difference between a Hunter and some a$$hole in the woods with a gun.

I know in N.L. the law states any .22 cal center fire round.

Just my opinion, I'll shut up now.

cheers
