My question is why?
while 6.8SPC is a good round, it is expensive and hard to buy in most places. plus the Mini's are a terrible rifle.
To answer your questions: I researched the round and you're correct, it is a good round. I feel it is the missing piece to make the Mini reach it's potential. I wanted a compact, rugged gun to easily pack around. Something that would be quickly accessible and I wouldn't have to worry about it getting wet, or dirty and it would still do the job. Yes factory ammo is hard to find but I don't use factory ammo. Components and dies are easily accessible Besides, I like being on the cutting edge. I want to utilise the round before it's mainstream. One of the advantages of being a reloader.
As for the Min itself: With a name like Rugerman do you think I care that a lot of people don't like the Mini-14? I have one in .223 and have had it for a long time. With iron sights it will shoot 2" groups at 100 yards. No, it's not minute of angle but no one, including Ruger, ever said it was a moa gun. It did ride with me on many, many trips on my Skidoo and trike. It got covered in snow and it got wet but it always worked. It is a solid, reliable gun. It's also a lot of fun to shoot and I never met anyone who didn't want to shoot it.
I am hoping this fall that a buck discovers that the 6.8 SPC could have been fired from a more accurate rifle but it went down just as fast from my Mini.
My apologies to daedra83 if I horned in on his thread.
Maybe but a 270 Win should be able to fire a 115gr bullet closer to 3400 + fps.
And I didn't go to a web site to find that velocity I mentally calculated that I can fire a 140gr bullet out of a 280 Rem (7mm) @ 3060fps which is basically the identical case too a 270 Win.
I looked it up in the Hornady manual and they say the maximum velocity they reached with a 110 gr. bullet in the 270 was 3300 fps. And that is with a maximum powder charge. Usually their data is less when chronographed in my gun.
I used the 115 gr. data because I couldn't find data for the 6.8 and the 270 in higher, identical bullet weights. 130 grs. is about as heavy as you can go in the 6.8 BTW.
