Mini-14 6.8

I just got one and was told that it was one of a few in Western Canada. They didn't know when would be more available. I have everything ready to reload for it but the Forster Competition Dies are waiting in customs. Have been there for two weeks. Don't know why I bothered having them sent airmail.

Sure can't wait to see how it shoots.

Its more than the .223 but NOT for big game. You can read all about on the gun sight web.

6.8s Remington SPC

Ballistics for 6.8 SPC using a 115 gr. Bullet =2625 fps @ muzzle; 1805 @ 300 yds

Energy: 1759 @ muzzle; 832 ft/pds @ 300 yds

If bullet zeroed at 200 yds it will be 2.5 inches high at 100 yds and will drop 10.7 inches at 300 yds

.270 Winchester ballistics using the same 115 gr. bullet shows 2710 fps at the muzzle and 1873 fps at 300 yds.

1875 ft/pds of energy at the muzzle with the .270 Winchester with 896 ft/pds remaining at 300 yds.

This information was taken from the Remington website.

Maybe but a 270 Win should be able to fire a 115gr bullet closer to 3400 + fps.

And I didn't go to a web site to find that velocity I mentally calculated that I can fire a 140gr bullet out of a 280 Rem (7mm) @ 3060fps which is basically the identical case too a 270 Win.

Using a 110gr.bullet, and IMR-4198, my reloads average 2500fps out of a 20" barrel. This cartridge has proven to be very accurate.Adequate for deer, great for coyotes using a Hornady 110gr. V-max.Without access to propriety powders, velocities will max out at around 2600 from a 20" barrel. Hornady has ammo, Remington. Silver State Armory in Nevada specializes in making 6.8mm for LE use.Epps has brass, Sierra's 110gr. Pro-Hunter is accurate, as well as Hornady's 110 V-Max and 110 BTHP. Speer's 100gr HP shoots tight groups in a Remington XCR, but its wide mouth causes feeding problems. The military load is listed as 44% more powerful compared to M855 performance at 200 meters.

My question is why?

while 6.8SPC is a good round, it is expensive and hard to buy in most places. plus the Mini's are a terrible rifle.

To answer your questions: I researched the round and you're correct, it is a good round. I feel it is the missing piece to make the Mini reach it's potential. I wanted a compact, rugged gun to easily pack around. Something that would be quickly accessible and I wouldn't have to worry about it getting wet, or dirty and it would still do the job. Yes factory ammo is hard to find but I don't use factory ammo. Components and dies are easily accessible Besides, I like being on the cutting edge. I want to utilise the round before it's mainstream. One of the advantages of being a reloader.

As for the Min itself: With a name like Rugerman do you think I care that a lot of people don't like the Mini-14? I have one in .223 and have had it for a long time. With iron sights it will shoot 2" groups at 100 yards. No, it's not minute of angle but no one, including Ruger, ever said it was a moa gun. It did ride with me on many, many trips on my Skidoo and trike. It got covered in snow and it got wet but it always worked. It is a solid, reliable gun. It's also a lot of fun to shoot and I never met anyone who didn't want to shoot it.

I am hoping this fall that a buck discovers that the 6.8 SPC could have been fired from a more accurate rifle but it went down just as fast from my Mini.

My apologies to daedra83 if I horned in on his thread.

I looked it up in the Hornady manual and they say the maximum velocity they reached with a 110 gr. bullet in the 270 was 3300 fps. And that is with a maximum powder charge. Usually their data is less when chronographed in my gun.

I used the 115 gr. data because I couldn't find data for the 6.8 and the 270 in higher, identical bullet weights. 130 grs. is about as heavy as you can go in the 6.8 BTW.

Rugerman - I merged your post.
No worries -- I have one 6.8 AR upper - as I think it is an interesting round. I no longer hunt - and living in the US the non restricted status of the Mini-14 is moot. I can see your purpose -- but that ammo is so damn expensive.

KevinB,
I was going to build an upper in the 6.8 configuration but then I realized I wouldn't be able to hunt or shoot with it other than at the range. So I opted for the mini-14. It wasn't much more than the cost of building the upper here and I could take it anywhere. Well, almost anywhere. Thanks for merging the thread. I realized after I should have included that info with the last thread.

You're lucky you can shoot/hunt with your AR. Maybe with a majority Conservative government the Remington R-15 will be legal here and we can do the same. A guy can dream!
