Mini 14 and why do some oppose

but it does come from the factory with a folding adjustable stock and a pistol grip and well the newer ones that have the medium l barrel are rather accurate and i have no complaints with the consistent groupings i have been getting at 200 meters with and without a scope

I don't think anyone is changing their minds here. If you're happy with it, go nuts.

I think the M14 occupies the under $1k, non res semi that is tacticool slot in Canada. That you can buy 2 for the price of a mini 14, accessories and smiths who specialise in it are readily available, and it can be used for large game hunting also make it attractive.

Norc M4s for $700 also make the restricted nature of AR's more palatable.

You're looking at this all wrong Nate.. to me what the mini14 has to offer is that it DOESN'T appear to be a black rifle in any way (depending on stock options of course), yet it gives you a semi-auto .223 for reasonably priced plinking in the bush, lightweight for slinging and fantastic sites. Only a few comparables available in Canada.. a keltec and.. not sure.. any other semi-autos in 223 (at relative price point)?
I'm quite certain Ruger never marketed it as black or military-esque or what have you - they call it a ranch rifle, to be sure.
Shoot the crap out of it and love every second of it - i love pulling the trigger on just about anything I pick up, have at er :)

i dont like how the black and green rifles are making other rifles feel left out...

cant we all get along?

Not without significant government funding and some kind of pay raise for our MP's...

Here's another question: Do they have to be 'black' or 'green' to qualify? Or is that just a qualifying term like 'tactical'?

The mini 14 is pretty much an updated version of the M1 carbine: Wood furniture, garand-based bolt, but chambered in a newer round and reasonably accurate for its purpose.

The only people who seem to bash on it in my experience are the rifle elitists who think that anything under $2000 is junk and mall ninjas who don't like it because it doesn't come standard with quad rails for all their tactical junk.

The Mini-14 went in and out of fashion, for me it was buying a non-res gun in Canada that could shoot 5.56mm. The 94 AWB down here was its main claim to fame for sales down here, as AR's had 'evil' features and needed to be neutered to a point.

Many folks buy them and are happy. The main reason for that is that they do not shoot that much, and they don't have a accuracy requirement.

For me the gun went south when I took it to the range and tried to group it. I know a number of folks who are in the same boat.

The grand scheme of life is that the vast majority of gun buyers are poorly educated, and do not know enough to make an educated firearms purchase.

So what you are saying, is that I am uneducated because (a) I like wood, and (b) I cannot afford a $2000+ rifle at this time.

This folks, is a textbook example of a rifle elitist.

I've had a few mini 14,s now and they are not "black" rifles no matter how you want to dress them up. With plastic bodies and extended pinned mags there starting to look like bubba'd sks. I am a mini fan thru and thru and owning a new target model they are quite a capable shooter bot not a black rifle

It's junk; anything spent "dressing it up" is just money down the drain. That's not being elitist - just pointing out a fact. Maybe you're unfamiliar what a "black rifle" is, but a Mini-14 doesn't even come remotely close... (it doesn't even accept AR magazines). If you can afford a Mini-14, you can certainly afford a Norc M4 (something that actually *is* a black rifle). The only caveat is that most black rifles (though not all) are restricted.

so blaxsun your telling me that black rifles HAVE to except AR mags?? see now were gettin some where so that means all the high end forign stuff on there is gone no m14 no csa vz58

Reading is fundamental. I explained why I had no use for the Mini-14, and the different reasons as to why folks tended to accept them, or not accept them.

I shoot about 15-25k 7.62mm a year, and about 20-30k 5.56mm, the Mini-14 does work for what I want, 1) It will fall apart due to firing schedule 2) It cannot be suppressed, cannot mount in line NV etc. 3) is not accurate enough for what I am doing. 4) has the woeful ergonomics of the M1/M14.

Honestly if you shoot less than 2K rounds a year, then this rifle may be great for you. But it does not meet my requirements, nor many many many others.

Well I shoot way more then 2 k a year with it and. Mine is threaded and I find to be very accurate perhaps mine is just blessed and so through the course of this thread I have determined that what makes a rifle a black or green rifle is it's popularity and not its possible tactical application despite the fact that's lots of people on CGN aren't even tactical shooters

Thank you all for your input it had been educational

Hi all,

Whether it is a black rifle or not is irrelevant to me. It is a semi-automatic rifle that will shoot 5.56mm or .223. It has a detachable magazine. It is under $1000.

Most importantly, it is non-restricted in Canada.

If the AR-15A2 was changed to a non-restricted rifle, I would change. Until then, I will stick with my Mini-14. Better the adequate gun you can carry, than the great one home locked in your gun locker.

The title "black rifle"only matters if you care, and I don't.
