Mini Mags vs. Velocitor vs. Federal Bulk. Price difference worth it?

Roundnose Minimags, I've found, are really good for reliable feed & function in semi-automatics. The CCI "AR-conversion-fodder" seems, IMHO, just to be based-off of a Minimag?

You know - I started out using Minimags, and never moved on.

I know I should try out all the manufacturers - but I haven't had anything but great results from the CCI Minimags.

There, I said it - I'm a bad person ...

Thanks. Last time I was there I bought everything they had.

They had more this evening -$18.99 /box. And "tins" of 325 Federal Bulk for $20. I had bought a bunch of Auto-match from Ammosupply.ca a few months ago and found it to be less reliable than the regular Federal bulk in both my SR22 and my Glock. The Auto-match actually sucks BAD in my Glock, where the regular Federal bulk was at least acceptable.

They may just be .22's, but...
If you're looking for accuracy you must consider your barrel's twist rate, the bullet's weight and as I've noticed... The velocity of the bullet.
Those mini mags shoot like crap out of one of my .22's... They're just too fast.
Ammo in the 1200fps range gives me dime sized groups at 50yrds.
The mini mags.... shots are all over the platz..lol

Mini mags are 1235fps... I think you might be thinking of stingers at 1600fps

to be frank, you have no reason to buy more expensive ammo for plinking. Why would you?

The cheap stuff works good, use the cheap stuff, you get to shoot more than twice as much for the same price. It makes NO sense to buy the 'better' ammo.

If shooting for scores, then sure, but not for plinking.

I'm a stickler for accuracy and shoot $20 eley when it counts, but for plinking, the cheapest stuff that feeds is plenty good enough, and is just as much fun.

I agree. I have a bunch of Auto-match at home that doesn't work well in anything. I'll have that ammunition until the end of time most likely.

Kinda sorta agree with you... But some of us don't really "plink"...

I only have 3 .22s, and all 3 get used for varminting. While they all put way more holes in paper and pop tins over the course of the year than they do gophers, I look at all shooting as practice, to some degree. I personally think it best to find which ammo shoots best from a given rifle, stockpile that, then use the same for plinking/target practice as you do for practical shooting. That way when you're shooting for real, everything behaves the same way you've learned to expect from shooting for fun.

You can pick up some bad habits that are hard to break from doing too much random plinking with cheap ammo.

The Federal 525 pack ammo shoots similarly to most other plated HV .22 ammo for me, as do the Winchester 333/555 packs. In my experience, standard velocity target ammo is the best choice if you want to shoot nice, ornamental groups, but most of the bulk ammo is OK for casual shooting.

Hey all,

Just took my brand new 715t flat top to the range after breaking it down and giving it a good cleaning. Ran Winchester M-22, CCI Blazer, and Remington Thunderbolts. All 3 round nose ammos cycled great. I did have about 3 "stovepipes" where the casing did not fully eject and caught the bolt as it came forward. Next trip I will be trying some 333 and some federal 525 pack. From now on I will prob just purchase the M-22 as they have stock at crappy tire, 1000 rounds for $52. Luckily the ones in town were not part of the recall and prob came from a different factory as the Lot# was very different from the GD42L recalled batch. (lot # i had was i think 2 extra digits with different alpha numeric sequence.)

Shows how different guns are. I shot an entire box through my Beretta .22 conversion kit and its the first ammo that I didnt have a single problem with.
