Since I've never experienced the irreversible trauma of being attacked by a grouse, I've never considered a .22 to be more minimalist than a survival gun. Go Marlin .45/70. Works for grizzlies and grouse too! OK, the 10/22 rides around behind the seat too, 25 round clip just in case of bad grouse gang.

I picked up this JW-20 a while back from the EE and it is great the way it is.It comes apart quickly into 2 equal sized pieces and is reliable and reasonably accurate.

If you kick in some extra money you can pick up a Browning version that you can survive with style with.[No conversion necessary]

I also would love to have an M6, but I have never even seen one first hand.

I used to have a Marlin Papoose. It was a handy little gun. I put on of those little SKS scopes on it and it all still fit in its floating bag. And the zero never shifted! The barrel locks in pretty repeatably I guess.

The Marlin 70HC is pretty similar to the 60 right? I have one and the thing is super accurate, small, and light. I would rather have an M6 though. But if you really want a survival gun go with a 12 gauge Remington 870, folding stock, and the key.... the shortest legal barrel with a removable choke.

Good posts so far gang!

I actually voted for "Other".

I would love to convert a Single-shot Rossi matched pair into a survival rifle. It's a break-open action. I love the way you have to arm the hammer before you can fire. Plus, being a single shot makes you want to make sure you hit what you're aiming at because the next shot is a good couple of seconds away!

Since this thread seems to have lost momemtum...maybe I could redirect it in another direction: What would be your perfect survival stock? Would you want to be able to store ammo in it? Would you want to be able to store some basic survival items in it as well or are you more of the mentality that your survival basics (knife, firestarting kit, etc) should be kept on your person at all times?

Cheers,

Fish

This has always been amusing to me :) :

cooey model 39 for a survival rifle.

here are my reasons.

1. very light weight and compact to shoot, unlike the 10/22 people are suggesting.
2. they are great shooters
3. they are plentifull
4. this is for survival. a semi will waste your priceless ammo. the 39 ensures your going to make every shot count
5. it can be lightened up on the stock without affecting anything.

6. it has been tested in alberta shooting millions of rounds and being left in a barn uncleaned for years at a time and it will still shoot. i have a bolt that was solid deep pitting rust......still works.

7.when your out of ammo it makes a nice club.

Or a Cooey Ace I, 16" barrel, make your own stock... fits in a map tube and rolls around the bottom of a canoe quite nicely.

Could take measurements if you want, I bet it could be done out of wood too.
It's a SS tube for the stock, holds 12rds.

Savage MKII. Simple design, cheap, accurate and ugly enough that I don't feel bad mucking with it. I'd say Cub, but the MKIIF is cheaper.

Nah, I was just wondering if you had any pics or details to look at. I don't need one bad enough to build one myself. Cool idea on storing the ammo in the stock, you could add a compartment on the forearm as well for more capacity.
