Mitchell's Mausers

We're lucky enough to not really have to deal with them up here in Canada... they're more of an American "problem".

Essentially what they do is convert beat up Russian Captured rifles which would be worth about $500 into pristine unissued all matching K98s that were just found in some obscure factory that never existed. They do this by re-stamping the rifles with new serial numbers, refinishing the metal (after it's been re-stamped) and then adding new wood. If they attempted to sell them as matching K98s they could be taken to court for fraud BUT they get around this by calling them "matched" rifles... Basically they fool new collectors into believing that they're getting something that they're not. Most collectors (including myself) think they're total scumbags but hey to each his own.

I'm sure they'd make alright shooters, but as Steve said, I just wouldn't buy one out of principle.

There's lots of Dinked Rifles out there to choose from. K98's, Garands,...

The James River Armory has Redinked Garands that look like brand new with Fake Cartouches on the new stock.
Or Bubba does the same thing with old parts and charges about the same.

Like they say, a Sucker is Born Every Minute.

So if I understand correctly, (I'm not real good at taking subtle hints), I should NOT buy a Mitchell's Mauser! Just wanna be clear. :)

I have a numbers matching K98 (1941) anyway and my collection consits of only one example of each country's front line bolt action rifle fielded in WW2. So I'm not in the market for one but if they were what they said they were... well I guess I knew they weren't any way, I just had to ask. But if any one does has a pristene matching K98 with all the stamps... let me know!

Funny that the bolts and butt plate are buff shined. That in itself is a giveaway to their non-originality. Are Gibbs 1903 A4's any better? The guy that does the Military Arms Channel gives those a good review as accurate shooters. They run around $1100.00.

Gibbs makes reproductions and is very upfront about that. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing wrong with that.

Mitchell's Mausers are not up front about the origin of their rifles. This is a problem, of course.

The smile of a happy customer with his Pimpshined Garand or K98. It puts the "Bling" in the "Ping".

That's what I'm talking about. Not everyone wants Rommel's wife's K98 with "I love you" carved into the stock, as a retirement investment collector piece! I have a good one but most of the stamps are pinged, even so I don't want to shoot it all the time because it does have some value. I'd buy a Garand or K98 or something that was a total refurb just as a shooter to have fun with, and if I run some corrosive ammo through it and forget to clean it... so what! If Mitchell was up front about them like some others are it would be a whole lot easier to swallow. The prices would have to be reflective though and there in lies the problem. Some people still think these 21st century rebuilds are collector guns and pay too much thus driving up prices for what are essentially - toys. Does anyone on here actually own a Mitchell (and willing to admit it)? I wonder what they shoot like?

They probably shoot alright, maybe even quite well.

As for anyone owning one, no idea. Mitchell's never really fooled anyone who knew anything about these rifles, but maybe they fooled a few guys on here. Couldn't say.

They're an American company so we we're lucky enough not to see many up here.

Milarm had 2 Mitchell's Mausers on consignment several months back.

James River Armory are sold up here as well. (Garands)

And Bubba has his own version of pimpin' here in Canada as well. (Pimped to New again)

Rejoice! We have a face to attach to these atrocities committed against our milsurp mausers. Here is a mug shot of the head of the project kindly provided by a fellow U.S. collector on Gunboards.

Mauser collectors of the world, unite! Grasp your mauser rifle close to your heart knowing she was not violated as others have been in recent past. Say you care about your rifle by sighting her in on this convenient target, I know I will be with my Gewehr 98 the next time I go out to the range.

I make it a choice to not visit their website but this is very sad as they have expanded to Lugers and P38sas well as Mosins now.

Look at these, Luger P08s, for $4000 and up. I hope they have not been scrubbed but given the company's history, I bet you they have been.

The horror does not end there:

P38s: http://www.mauser.org/walther-p-38/

Surely this is over ? ... No, it is just beginning:

Kar98ks : http://www.mauser.org/german-k98-mauser-rifle/

What is wrong with these ones you ask ? "In the white" bolt, a clearly sanded and refinished stock, polished and reblued metal, and the infamous restamped markings.

Notice how in the price list they even make mention of this strategy.

Now they extend to Mosins and we can all bet what is going to happen with these rifles. Notice there is no price list yet. I wonder what the sales pitch might be ? "Own Vasily Zaytsev's rifle!" perhaps.

Lastly, you can see Mitchell Mauser's true colours at work with this "baby mauser" that has clearly been refinished overall and is not a historical variant though they did elude to this in the advertisement.

Enough of looking at that website, time to go hold my babies and tell them its okay to come out of the closet :).
