Hi,
I have been thinking of making a mock scrape near my stand, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips to help me. Which scents do you use?
There are a few tree rubs & one good scrape in particular close by.
Thanks

For mock scrapes that I make by bow hunting tree stands, I carry a glass jar in my pack and take a bit of the soil from real scrapes I come across and put it on the soil at my mock scrapes. If I don’t put soil from real scrapes on my mock scrapes I’ll use a couple cap full’s of buck urine and after the 1st week of November doe estrus scent. For your mock scrapes make sure you pick a tree that has a small branch at chest level over top of the soil you scrape up for their eye gland. I always pick a pine or spruce tree for mock scrapes.

Here’s something that sounds bizarre and probably is, but last Sunday I was sitting in one of my tree stands and I thought about pouring apple juice from those little tetra boxes on mock scrapes. I was curious, so on Monday I poured a tetra box on two different real scrapes to see how those two different deer would react. I’ll be back there Friday.

We’ll see how northern Alberta deer will react to this super apple urine, considering that they have never seen or smelled an apple before in their lives.

I tried it once about 7 or 8 years ago. I used a garden hoe to scrape the ground and put buck in rut gel into it. That was October 30th IIRC. I came back 4 days later on opening morning and the scrape was DESTROYED! All of the little saplings near the scrape were also wrecked.

2 days after I returned, the biggest buck I had ever seen came back to check it out. Long story short, my brother-in-law shot the deer (very poorly) and we never did find him. The deal was he wasn't supposed to be shooting that day, just along for the tour to 'my honey hole'.

Did I mention I don't hunt with him anymore?

So, I would say they work based on my limited trial. Just be sure to keep your scent down as much as possible (rubber gloves, rubber boots, etc..)

I'd say that the most important thing is really the overhanging licking branch. Last year i made one and put the tarsal gland in it from another buck that was shot by another member and the next morning i shot a 7 pointer in the scrape.

Usally at my father's camp in Glen Sutton but this year it's a no go. I'm gonna miss opening weekend for the first time in about 18 year's !!

awwwww

That's too bad Sebastien! I won't miss it! I'm hunting in Brigham on Saturday morning & then in Glen Sutton on Saturday afternoon with Corey (Murelyn's son).
Take care!

I just got back from bow hunting this week and we used some Buck Urine from Canadian Tire, I believe it was the Code Red brand. It brought them in like crazy, we got two bucks, and now need to see if we can get more tags in for are area. Should have got them befoe...
