Mock suppressors legal in Canada?Y/N

Ha ha ha. Sorry my question was a little rough, Which one is it?

I kinda like the shroud type that screws on and exposes the muzzle. Kinda makes a goofy long barrel look better.

thread on the end. Well I had several guns with various lengths of muzzles some 7" some 14.5 some 18"

As an RCMP Tactical Trainer I can say that in Canada it is legal to have a mock suppressor on your weapon as long as it does not in any way muffle or suppress the report of the weapon in anyway and is purely esthetic, additionally it must still fall within legal barrel length. Finally be aware however if a member observes your firearm with a suppressor attached at anytime, you will immediately be investigated and the burden of proof will be on you to prove to the member at that time the suppressor is in noway capable of reducing the weapons report. This may be extremely difficult on the side of a provincial hwy or city street and in that case you may be taken into custody and formerly charged under the prohibited weapons act in the CCC until a RCMP firearm expert examines the device and passes it as legal. This in itself could take several days. So is it legal? Yes, is it smart, you be the judge of that. Good luck with your project.

The problem is how do you know if a fake suppressor does or does not reduce the sound of the shot? Measuring the sound of a gunshot is not something you can do with an $80 sound meter. The noise event associated with a gunshot is VERY loud (ca 165 dB) and VERY short (ca 40-60 microseconds). It requires a very special and very expensive sound meter to capture the entirety of the event. It also requires a specific testing protocol to ensure that only the shot and no reflections are captured.

There is no dB limit specified in our law. Thus a device that reduces sound by only 1dB could be classed as a sound suppressor. It all depends on the judge and what you can or cannot prove.

Just cause a gunshot sounds loud with a fake suppressor attached, doesn't mean the device isn't reducing the noise of the shot. Our ears are sensitive to duration and frequency and we can be fooled very easily into thinking one sound is louder than another when it is not.

According to the regulation a device which "muffles or stops the sound or report of a firearm" is not a prohibited device, it must be "designed or intended to muffle or stop the sound or report of a firearm". A fake suppressor which was designed for cosmetics and happens to reduce the sound is not automatically a prohibited device. In the case of fake suppressors, most are just barrel extensions with no intentional sound deadening devices contained, and therefore should be easily proven to be designed and intended for the look, not function of a suppressor.

"prohibited device” is under section 84 and means

(a) any component or part of a weapon, or any accessory for use with a weapon, that is prescribed to be a prohibited device,
(b) a handgun barrel that is equal to or less than 105 mm in length, but does not include any such handgun barrel that is prescribed, where the handgun barrel is for use in international sporting competitions governed by the rules of the International Shooting Union,
(c) a device or contrivance designed or intended to muffle or stop the sound or report of a firearm,
(d) a cartridge magazine that is prescribed to be a prohibited device, or
(e) a replica firearm;

Very complicated ,

I like to have wind talker on My M21A5 just for cool looking and increase the sound not decrease.

No matter how people think .

Has anyone heard of physics, or acoustics? Has anyone heard of a megaphone? Adding a fake suppressor as long as the hole on the end of the mock suppressor is larger than the opening of the barrel caliber size (meaning, not the exact same size as the muzzle- but larger) then the sound will be amplified. It’s just acoustics.

No, but nice try though.
