I've been given the opportunity to buy a S&W model 27 of 60s-70s vintage from the fellow who bought it from my uncle many years ago.

It has an 8-3/8" barrel, which is longer than I look for in a gun, and I'd probably not be interested if not for the family connection. My longest Smiths are 6".

Just wondering who has a longer Smith and how you find them for shooting and balance. I shoot in the bullseye/duelist style for preference.
I have a 10" Super Blakhawk that I find to be too unwieldy for this short of plinking, but a single action 44 is a different beast.

I think most prefer the 5-6 inch length because of balance, easier to carry etc and if you are a good shot, a couple of inches of barrel doesn't always translate to more accuracy.

For me, I do like the 8" barrels and don't find them that bad. I've had a 7.5 RedHawk and 8 3/8 686 and I really liked them. I'd be jumping on that 27 and if it doesn't do it for you you can easily sell for probably more than you are going to pay.

I have a 8 3/8 model 27 as well as many other S&W revolvers with the 8 3/8 inch barrels. I like them but I am sure I would not if I was packing them but alas that is not going to happen anytime soon so until then I am good with them.

My 629 has the 8 3/8" barrel and I really like it. Shoots incredibly with a tube that long and that much sight radius. If I was you, I'd jump on that model 27 asap.

Ta. I'm just trying to convince myself that I don't need it. Hasn't succeeded though. Lol

It is nice to bring some of these things back into the family.

I have a 586 with that long barrel and it is pretty boring to shoot. A pistol should take some effort and focus to hit the bullseye.
I am almost certain it has gone out and shot a few possibles without me just to prove I need it more than it needs me.

That's going to be a nice shooting revolver, and the longer sight radius will be nice as well. I too prefer a 6" gun, but if that was around my neck of the woods i'd have already snapped it up...i have a 6" and a 3" 27 in that year range, and they are among the nicest revolvers i have.
