You might of seen the older girl .308win i posted- Red butt pad, push feed model- around late 80s early 90s version---
it had the older Vari-x III 2.5-8x36mm , a litttle tempting for total of $1100 with a banner 2 4-12 thrown in as a sweetener (but hes been sort of pushy and why sweeten the model 70)...

then, i stumbled onto this---

12 month old, 80 Round fired at a range, Bi pod included, gun bag and VX freedom 4-12x40mm Control round Feed - immaculate.
.270 winchester.


Now-

im so set up for .308 reloading and have hunreds of projies---- literally.
but i did once have a 270win so i have some dies , neck die and only very small supply of projies.........

this whole outfit for $1500 + post which will see another say $250 total so around $1750 landed as mine, as is . scoped.
its advertised for $2,200 complete.

My pick would be .270, because I think it's the superior calibre. I just sold a Portuguese made featherweight in .30'06 and it was one of the slickest actions I've ever handled. And I just prefer CRF.

Two things; I would lose the bipod and the rail. The featherweight is a nicely balanaced, light rifle; why add a big lump of weight to it?
2nd; lose the rail and get a set of Talley Ligthweights. Bring the scope down as close to the bore as possible.
 
270 because 308 is boring to me. With my fwt and thin barrel any change in pressure on the forend changes poi so I dont use a bipod on it. Mine is 223 though. Mint with only a couple hundred rounds fired if that. Funny how the prices differ as id assume its a $700 rifle with scope here

Yes. I had an 80's manufacture in 7x57. Lovely little rifle but sensitive. I found more than 2 or 3 shots without cool down period it would walk successive rounds progressively higher on the target. Fine for hunting though.

Same with mine. Joy to carry and nice to look at but it just sits. Maybe someday ill rebarrel it to a 25/45 sharps or something. Nice rifles though

I’m getting more pragmatic in my old age though. The 308 is a nice package ready to hunt, how likely are you to be in a spot that the 308 isn’t enough but the 270 would add confidence? Do you shoot to 350-400?
 
If I were looking at these rifles, it wouldn't be because I needed a basic hunting rifle; it would be because I really wanted a Model 70 Featherweight, so that changes the priorities. Of these two choices, I'd go .270.

First, it would need to be a CRF; this feature is meaningless to me in a practical sense, but a push-feed model 70 just isn't right IMHO.

Second, I have a bunch of .308's and don't need or want another one. I have no interest in the .270 as a cartridge, don't even own one now, but it's a classic choice for a Model 70 and that's what I would be looking for.

And, as stated above, I'd get rid of all that silly extra ballast on the gun. The bipod would go first. The rail would be replaced with a set of 2-piece Weaver-style bases. I'm shallow, so I'd mount a nice gloss-finish Leupold or Bausch&Lomb on there, in low gloss rings to keep the scope as low as possible. A 3-9x or 2-7x would be fine, or even a fixed 6x. No AO, no 56mm objectives, no illuminated road-map reticle, no FFP. Just a simple, classic hunting scope on a simple, classic hunting rifle.

Oh, and ditch the rubber buttstock condom also. Looks like absolute crap, covers that nice walnut and all it does is store a bunch of cartridges which you won't use hunting because by the time you have fired the ones in the magazine, your POI will have wandered off somewhere out of the hot barrel.

Just my $0.02..but, hey, you asked...:)

Yes , 308s are great an good to hunt but I won't be in the thick #### or wet with this one, so a fine weather , more Fallow deer than Sambar but 300-400 on the cards at times.
Perfect combo !!

Our min Legal big deer cal.is .270 also.

I will keep her in the 130s I rekon to keep her flat, as have the 7mm08 with that 154gr-160 all rounder.

In a ideal scenario, it's across gulley 200m sort of shots
