OK hello all, once again I will grace these boards with a "what is like this" question. I have used a search function ad have come up with similar threads, but not one that quite fits my criteria.

Anyways, I am toying with the idea, and by toying I mean seriously considering if not decided already, to buy a pair if 1911's. I have figured I would pick up a traditional 45acp model, and a modern model. I have already decided on the traditional model and am going with a Colt series 70 govt. model in blue finish.

For the modern pistol, this is What I am thinking. The concept is a modern interpretation of a 1911 that would be what a NATO Military would adopt if they were to adopt the 1911 platform today. Since it would be used by a NATO country it would of course need to be chambered in 9mm.

And since Im not a NATO country looking for a pistol, I still want some Esthetically pleasing suggestions as well, so if you could keep it to a standard 1911 profile as a base requirement, and have a dark finish (No stainless), that would be great.

I have looked at the options by STI and their are a few that caught my eye, and of course thought about building up a Norc, but would like to stay away from the Norc if I can (nothing wrong with them, but want a more "quality" pistol).

Thanks.

the STI's are nice, I have a Spartan in 9mm and a Trojan in .40S&W.
In 9mm, they absorb the "recoil" very well, due to their weight and heavy barrel (near close to bull barrel).
All said, my Shadow is a way better shooter :)

+1 for the STI's...

I played with one at a store (Spartan IV 9mm) and a Trojan .45

both felt really nice, how ever I liked the feel and look of the 4.25" barrel.

I ended up just ordering a Ranger II 9mm which is a commander silde/barrel, on a full size government frame... Can't wait for it to get here

The model I'd recommend would completely depend on budget. But keeping it reasonable I'd suggest the Trojan. STI has been making this model, and a tonne of other 9mm 1911's for a long time and they seem to be relatively easy to get running well. Theres also an incredible number of people that shoot Trojans in IPSC/USPSA/IDPA which translates into volumes of forum posts and information on them, what works well with them as far as mags and accessories, how to improve them etc etc.

If the cost doesn't put you off an STI Trojan or Ranger II would be a very nice option. Both come out of the case with nice, if not match grade, trigger pulls and low creep as well as being very accurate. They are just enough nicer than the Spartan to tip the scales for my money.

Another nice option for a "modern" 1911 would be a S&W model in blued steel. The external extractor qualifies as a "modern" upgrade that is actually a nice feature. I've only avoided the S&W option myself due to preferring my 1911's to be more traditional.

If you're looking at it from the "modern NATO" frame of reference then you'll want to avoid the lower rail for mouning accesories. NATO forces would not be relying on a handgun as their primary weapon so they would not be looking at junk hanging off the bottom of the rail and making it tough to holster the gun.

well the usmc ordered this as an issued gun and its probably the most recent 1911 to be bought and issued so it would win out on "what would NATO issue" imo

no, its just the most recent issued 1911 so its probably the best metric to judge with unless someone else has issued a 1911 lately that I missed hearing about

Wilson Combat represent the top of the Semi Custom 1911 market. Wanstalls the sight sponser can order them for you, but the wait time, especially now, would likely be close to two years.

Definitely looking at the Trojan in 9mm.

But wondering about the 2011 "High Capacity" model from STI, I know its a moot int up here, but it would go with the guidelines as a find it hard to see a modern military adopting a pistol with a 9 round mag over one with up to a 26 round mag. The polymer grip intrigues me on the 2011, but wonder how durable it is?
