"Modern" 1911 in 9mm?

How about a Sig 1911 in 9mm?

I recently had some difficulty removing a mag from a Trojan at a local gun shop. On further investigation, it was a build up of rust that came free of charge from it's origin in the Philippines....
I have no personal experience with STI's base model stuff other than that, and certainly any steel gun can have rust issues ( I recall Kevin B's complaints on the Kimberly he had bought new).
Every manufacturer has base model stuff and while some of it has better advertising, I question whether the quality is reflective of the price in most cases. Those Norincos are looking better and better....

Any modern military procurement (fantasy or not) will require a light rail, I'd look at the STI Duty One or Tactical SS models for a more traditional single stack design and the 2011 Tactical for a double stack. The biggest hitch with getting any of these to run well is the magazines, you have more options with the single stack guns, YMMV.

As far as durability of the 2011 polymer frames, I don't think it's anything to worry about as noted above. There are a few gun press revies of the 2011 Tactical guns at the STI media page: http://www.stiguns.com/resources/sti_press/

You can get other double stacks in 9mm, Para-Ordinance for example (harder to find now), SVI (full custom $$$) and so on. Good luck, sounds like a fun project.

I need help selecting my first 1911 handgun as well.

Which would you choose between and why? Thanks.
For target and plinking only not competitive yet and not to carry.

sig sauer match elite stainless
kimber stainless target II
STI Trojan 9mm
cz 75 SP01 Tactical Sport
SW1911 Pro Series 9MM

take a look at the SAM line from wolverine
i have the SAM military 1911A1 in 9MM and love it 7000 rounds through it now ans couldn't be happier
take a look at them they are worth looking at for the price

I have a SAM enhanced and love it. The sights could use some upgrading, but its a well made handgun.

Note that the CZ isn't a 1911. It's a nice gun but it is a very different design both externally and internally.

Of the rest I'd call it a coin toss. Go with the one you like the overall look and finish the best. A lot of folks like adjustable sights. On a 1911 I'd rather have the trimmer looking fixed sights. I prefer the look of the stainless finish on S&W and SIG more than the rougher sand blasted look of the Kimber. I'd also look for front and back checkering on the frame for a steadier hold with less hand pressure. But these are all just minor details of personal choice. Figure out what you want and pick the brand and model that has them since there's no meaningful internal reliability issues with any of those brands you list.

Most 1911 sucks, out of the box - many become great/phenomenal after the initial break-in/settling-in period (or assisted break-in, i.e. lapping) and minor tuning/polishing

That being said - if STI Spartan interests you, go with SAM, they are both made in the same factory using similar parts BUT the SAMs are approx. $200 cheaper.

If you anticipate heavy use on this, minimum I would recommend is the STI Trojan that comes with a bunch of upgrades (ramped and supported bbl, undercut trigger, better sights, STIpling on front strap etc) for an extra $400 (approx.) over the Spartan. Additionally, it is actually made by STI in Texas rather than Philippines and difference in quality shows.

There are also mid tier options that add value (such a tri-top slides, forged frames etc - and cost understandably increases as a result) as you move up like the STI USPSA, Wilson Combat, Night Hawk 9s. if on the other hand budget isn't a concern you could have one built by SVI, built completely to your specs where you choose every last detail on the pistol (check the gunbuilder on their site).

PS: You could of course go with nicer sounding brands like Sig or Kimber that are in the same cost bracket as the Trojan, but based on my personal experience with 1911s - the STIs hold up much better to actual sustained round count (think 20-30k rounds per year).

Kinda burned through this post but the Kimber Custom II's in 9mm are SUPER nice and prob on par with the Sig etc in terms of price.

That said I've shot an STI and it was pretty sweet, I'd recommend either

Been looking at some more of STI's offerings and found out that the Lawman comes in 9mm as well as .45. The lawman was one of the first of STI's pistols that caught my eye but looked away when Freedom Ventures only listed them in .45. I imagine they could bring in a 9mm version ya?
