Got another gun bug, been going down the short barrel level rabbit hole and looking at an interesting build. Wanted to see what folks think about this as a plinker / deer hunting rig.

I like the versatility and mobility of a short barrel (specially with a pistol caliber), but not a lot of options out there on good actions with good accessories. So landed on the R95 Triple Black Mares Leg in 357 Mag. Then add a Ranger Point Precision furniture.

I already reload in 45-70 but that seems like a waste with a 13.5" barrel and I want to save on reloading, so the 357 mag seems to make more sense.

Thoughts on the build?

So similar to this but with the full Ranger butt stock

Henry or Rossi? Seem Henry has better rep, but I don't see any tactical forends for Henry mare's leg...

ALSO I have issues with the $1900-2000 price point on the R95 Mare's Leg, just seems... high

I'd go with a 16" barrel carbine to get a bit more performance for hunting and another round or two (whichever it is) of mag capacity. I have to say the 13.5" barrel looks pretty damn good to me, though.

I've been eyeing the Morrison, with its 12" barrel for ....... reasons.

But I'm already well down the Rossi R95 rabbit hole.

A first I was thinking 45-70 cause I already have the gear to reload, but now I'm thinking 357 mag for reloading cost and more plinking.. And good enough for deer in the thick forest I usually hunt. I have a 6.5 for longer range...

I think the build with the folding stock looks great! Have you considered adding a cartridge quiver to the front rail - just in front of the action? If you're going with a full buttstock, I'd go with a quiver there as well.

I'm going to follow this thread... I recently inherited a Rossi Ranch Hand in .44 magnum. It isn't the easiest gun to shoot 2 handed, so I'm thinking of a similar build. I really like the folding stock and the handguard you've spec'd out. The stock buckhorn sights are terrible, so I like the idea of a rail for optics.

On the topic of optics, what are you thinking? Holosun?

I don't think you can use a folding stock, even though the rifle is under 26" stock, by adding a folding stock the rifle no longer falls under the "exception".. If you can fire the rifle with the stock folded and it's under 26" it's now a restricted rifle is my understanding

huh, I was not aware of the Morrison, interesting...

Also, what did you build with the R95? Feel like sharing? And hows the quality on the R95?
I got my Rossi Triple Black a bunch of years ago and went through a number of different forends before the full length Ranger Point MLOK. Basically I ended up building the same basic thing as the Citadel just with the Rossi stock and a cheek riser.

I quite like the Rossi, it has been very reliable. I've shot over 1000 rounds through it and cleaned the thing only once about mid way. I just cleaned it again as it was doing some weird stuff with the shell elevator. I think only needing to clean every 500 or so rounds is pretty decent.

And let's not forget the Rossi is way less expensive than most of the other makes. I wasn't super dedicated to a lever gun, so the Rossi was a good choice at a reasonable price. I was never going to spend $3000 on a lever rifle.

Like a mechanical safety to prevent it from being fired? I have no intention of firing it with the stock folded. It's a PITA to shoot using two hands. I'd like to be able to keep it in my backpack for deployment if required.

I guess the rules don't have to make sense...
