Modern Sporter - Build Discussions

I hear this all the time.... and yet we've sent back something like 3x more Nightforce scopes for warranty this year... of course, the paperwork coming back says "No Fault Found", but the scope magically works again.

I'm a big fan of the brownells BCG's, they work great and are good quality. I have several of them, and we'll continue to keep bringing them in.

Too funny personally I like the sightron it seemed to be a good competition for Nightforce and price better

I intend on ordering a forward assist upper and lower, one tomorrow and one 2 weeks from now. In order to space funds vs timing which would i order first as which would come in first to start my build?

They would be around an August delivery. If I recall atrs estimates on time frame

My sightron stac 2.5-17.5x56 went in for warranty twice in 3 months. Sightron was great to deal with, and when it failed the second time, I asked if they could swap the reticle and they sent a brand new scope. The replacement scope has been flawless, so maybe I just had a dud.
Vortex.... that’s a real love/hate relationship for me. I own around 8 of them and at least half have been sent back, mostly for illumination issues. Like previously said, their warranty service is second to none, but it’s still annoying to send them away and then have to rezero them afterwards.
Nightforce I haven’t had any issues with my 3 optics, but I’m not overly impressed with my shv for the price. I think there are much better options in that price range, but they don’t carry the prestigious name....

Just my experiences, others will vary

I've had 6 vortex scopes only have 2 left
6.5-20x44 was probably the best one I owned no problems that I can remember
6-24x50 hs-t wouldnt track reliably. Dial up to 600 shoot a few dial back to 200 and shoot and it's out 2 inches for a few shots or i had to go past zero then it would be good
6-24x50 PST did the same thing
3-9x44 crossfire 2 had bad glass and wouldnt hold zero
1-6 strike eagle is good so far
6.5 20x50 has very bad parallax issues going to be sending it away.

I have 4 sightron SIIISS 8-32x56 and sold 1. None have had problems. 1 had a high zero. Like with 20 moa rail and 10 moa rings I only had 35 moa of elevation. Not really a problem as it held zero and tracked. It got sent in and I sold it.

I've also had a bunch of Hawke scopes. They have really good glass for the price. Most have been the varmint series. All but 1 tracked great and held zero for under $400. 3-9, 3.5-10, 2: 4-16 and a 6-24. I have a another one I cant remember but it wouldnt hold zero. I took it back and they swapped it out for me over the counter. That's a hell of a warrantylife time to boot. And a sidewinder 8-32x56. It holds and tracks great but the glass isnt the best and is hard to see on any higher power than 22 past 300m. Just cant focus it. But these 7 scopes were all under $650. Probably the best bang for the buck out there. Hawke is a well known brand in th UK high power air rifle circuit. Air rifles are known to be scope killers and Hawke is built to withstand the abuse that air rifles dish out.

I've never ran a nightforce but one day I will own a few. I've heard of sheep hunters dropping their gun down the mountain and nightforce replaces the scope. Could just be a rumor but that's an impressive warranty if it's true.

Wait...if the tolerences in the gauges can't be trusted, then aren't the gauges worthless even if you stick with one brand?

Its because the regulating industry like Saami or CiP have a min and max spec for each cartridge. They can be within that range and still be acceptable.

Not at all. All I am saying is that using brand X go gage and brand Z no go gage is not a good plan due to the plus or minus tolerance values that all machined items have as being acceptable.
If brand X is made on the larger side of the allowed tolerance and brand Z is made on the smaller side you can get an incorrect assessment. typically staying with 1 brand you have a better chance of them being kept to the same tolerance.

Regardless of what upper you order and want it shipped with the lower you won't see the set until late July or probably mid August.
We are making all of the uppers first and then going back to lowers. It is a more efficient manner in which to produce them.
Currently we are just finishing the run of SS uppers than will get going on the F/A uppers once we have the runs of uppers done we will again start to make lowers.

My build, after some parts swapping....will be built on the SS upper first and then transferred to the FA when ready.

BCM buffer tube assy
AAC nickle boron bcg
V7 short throw single side safety selector
Battle Arms mag release button
ALG ACT trigger
Raptor charging handle
Magpul K grip
Magpul fixed carbine stock (may swap out for a MFT Minimalist depending on final weight/balance)
V7 titanium micro brake
War Sport bolt catch
Strike Industries dust cover
BCM 15" MCMR handguard
BCM low pro gas block
Faxon 223 Wylde 20" heavy fluted barrel

Weighed out all of my parts above, with the MFT mimimalist installed and allowing 10oz for the upper total weight is coming in at just a hair under 6.5lbs bare. No optics, no mag.

Does anyone know the weight of a stripped MS upper/lower? I'm estimating 17oz (485g) based on an average sample of a few FA AR receivers. That puts my projected weight at 5.8lbs before optics and mag.
