Modernized mosin

That's pretty damn cheap for that much beefy bolt action ammo. Should last a long time. Thanks for clearing that up for me, I think I'll get one maybe this weekend. I see you're new to the site as well, welcome. I'm in Nanaimo too.

All in, (depending on machining cost) you can build this and have a huge pile of ammo for under $800.

I think larrysmith was being sarcastic. Mind you if one doesn't know what to look for, a rare or unique example could end up falling victim to the chop saw.

What's the point? You ruined a rare milsurp. It's sad really.

Not at all. That's improving an old milsurp. Just because it's old, doesn't mean it's not ugly as f__k and just because you change it's clothes doesn't mean anything permanent has been done. Let the girl keep the ugly dress in the closet. Don't like it, go to the museum. They're not rare either they're a dime a dozen. Maybe one day, but not now. Until then the ugly ass stock will stay in storage. If you want I'll even smother it in cosmo, would that make you feel better?

This was my though initially but the rifle looks pretty good and it's working well.

I would still suggest buying a commercial, price point rifle chambered in a modern cartridge with the extra cost of dealing with scoping an old milsurp and feeding the beast hunting bullets. But if the owner is satisfied, I say good work.

Sometime ago, I watched video on youtube, the guy cut & crowned his mosin with basic knowledge & machinery. It came out fine & is very accurate.

the guy that did mine, did a great job. he is not a gunsmith but is extremely patient and skilled with his hands. he learned about it watching videos and reading on the net.

This weekends mosin challenge

The surpluss stuff is Bulgarian. Stamped 1071 so it's been in the bag longer than I have been on the planet. This is the specs from the 7.62x54r site.
Bulgaria
DATA 10 (country)
71 (year) steel copper wash casing . .311" 148.1 gr. steel core

I noticed you can't see the 185 gr. written on the mfs

Interesting. Keep us up on the results. I bought 440 rounds of what was advertised as Russian surplus. I think it's stamped the same as those but came in a russian looking spam can. Did Bulgaria make ammo for russia? Do they write using the same characters as the Russians do?

I really hate when people "modernize" a milsurp -- mostly because 9.9 times out of ten they've added some ugly stock and completely bubba-ed it up -- but you did fine work on that Mosin-Nagant. Nicely done.

The beauty of the Mosin is that it has the dovetail so you can "modernize" it with no alterations to the gun. I really like the scout setups, and the full length barrel, so I have no idea why people chop them up. Why not just buy a Vanguard or a cheap Savage?

Some people, I guess, don't see the intrinsic value of a rifle that probably survived a war and is a part of history. Or don't care.

your entitled to your opinion.

its so rare, that i could go to at least 4 stores tomorrow and buy a pile more. Thats without alleviating from my daily commute.

I've hear this excuse a lot and its somewhat of a narrow minded and selfish one.
Although, in large part it's true, except if everyone did as you did then the supply of these prevalent, unmolested rifles would quickly dwindle and disappear.
The saving grace is that not every shooter does as you do to these pieces of history.

Thanks! I'm pleased with the results.

The opportunity to do this came up. So I did. I could have bought an off the shelf.

Narrow minded is thinking that every rifle that has ever been made should be kept in its original form. Not everyone needs to keep museum pieces. Also, it's i have only done this to one rifle. My enfield has not been modified by me. Nor has any other gun.

I plan on shooting each box on its own targets and will definitely post the results.

Please note that my comment about people who don't care about the intrinsic value of milsurps was focused on those who destructively modify their rifles. I have no issue with what you did.
