Modernized mosin

Same here. I like having a couple boxes of hunting legal ammunition for all of my fun guns. One box to test it, one box to save. But like you, I don't source the internet for it. If I see it in my LGR I get it. I only bought all the boxes of .203gr sp 7.62x54r because it was during the time I vowed to never fire corrosive though my SVT-40 but now I do use corrosive. If you lived near Tofino id trade you a couple boxes for corrosive. I've got 15 boxes of .203gr sp.

Thanks MMM,
A bit far! in the Fraser Valley. Also, only have 40 rds of corrosive as is!

I've been considering doing this as an affordable rifle project. I wish we could get the ready-made modified bolts for using a regular scope mount (if anybody knows of a Canadian supplier of Mosin bolts PM me). I'd like to be able to switch back to original specs if possible.

IMO, instead of worrying about being able to switch back to original. Buy two and keep one in the safe. They are relatively cheap. Im not going to bother with buying rifles i wont shoot; however i did think about buying another mosin incase this one craps the bed.

I vowed to never fire corrosive ammunition though my SVT-40. I quickly gave up and started using corrosive. I know guys who use corrosive ammunition in a CZ 527 Carbine.

My LGS has piles of MFS 203gr soft point steel cased non-corrosive ammunition. Well, not anymore since I bought it all. I saw Cabella's has the same stuff but they charge $20 a box after taxes while my LGS charged $13.

The MFS soft point is 25$ at Cabelas here.............can only imagine the markup on that stuff lol.

That's probably what I will end up doing. If I do that I'll also feel less guilty about shortening the barrel length. I would normally agree with not buying a rifle I don't shoot. That said I'd like to begin building up a collection of old military rifles. I know that the 91/30 is everywhere right now for $150 but that could change. My father bought an m44 for $60 at SIR years ago and now those are much harder to find and almost always over $300. So might be best to pick up two in the near future.

Installed the tasco. According to 7.62x54.whatever website. A zero at 25 yards is perfect for 200. So I got to less then 1" at 25 easily enough. (3 rnds then adjust) then Shot at a 6" steel about 100yrds away 4/5 hits unsupported in -22deg is good enough for me for today. Tomorrow I will head to the range and see how she does at a measured 200.

The easiest and cheapest scope mount only requires that you remove the rear sight. Any mount made for the standard dovetail will fit perfectly. If you need to use a weaver type mount they also have bases to adapt to bot .

Well she shoots good. If you load 4 using the mag plate with an open bolt you can load one into the chamber and start shooting. Much easier then trying to put them in from the top. The scope mount came loose at the 100 and I didn't have a way to tighten it at the range.

i decided to go pick up the ati mount after i saw this. i was looking at the true shot and decided that i don't need to pay more for the mount than i did the rifle

The thing about sporterizing a Mosin is you have to keep in mind that the rifles quality of construction is about that of a modern day $1000 + rifle even ones with crude construction puts most modern rifles to shame. So its either you build your own $1000 hunting rifle or you go buy one. I don't know how others feel, but Id sooner rather drop $1000 building a Mosin into a hunting rifle before Id ever spend $300 on a Savage Axis. Not saying the rifle is junk they work but its like how Id rather push a broken down Chevy before Id drive a Volkswagen.

i looked around on here at tons of rifles before i decided i would do a budget build. i will upgrade the optics eventually, but for now a $100 cdn tire scope works. on a $150 rifle with $150 worth of modifications. Realistically It needs to be able to effectivaly take down deer and coyote, Im confident i will be able to shoot 1" at 100yrds with it.

So the scope mount came loose? Do you have an idea of the cause? Im not sure I would trust the ATI mount to ever stay solid.

I agree with you on that point.

When Captain Sergei Ivanovich Mosin of the Imperial Army and the Belgian designer Léon Nagant submitted their rifles for evaluation in 1889, the build quality of rifles was far superior than “run of the mill” rifles today. The stock is solid wood, not composite. The parts are machined, not stamped.

Don’t get me wrong, new rifles today are awesome to look at and shoot... I’m just an ‘ol fashioned kind of guy who prefers to build on the quality of yesteryear.

This is why I decided that Mosin Nagant rifles would be my "deer riddles". The '34 has a scope for when I want to reach out and touch something and the '40 is just as it was when Ivan or Boris prepped it for long term storage in case Mother Russia might have to fight again !!

Got a deal on a new scope. 6-24x50

1" squares at 100yards with corrosive surplus ammo.

No complaints from me with this rifle. I think I may have to buy some quality ammo and see what happens

How much does a crate of this surplus caliber cost? It shoots a 308 cartridge right? Is that 7.62 x 51 or x 54? I've been thinking about getting one of these lately, how can you not when they are so cheap to buy...

I believe the bullet diameter is .311 (762x54r) a crate of 880 will cost you $225 I got one this summer here in nanaimo for $200

That's pretty damn cheap for that much beefy bolt action ammo. Should last a long time. Thanks for clearing that up for me, I think I'll get one maybe this weekend. I see you're new to the site as well, welcome. I'm in Nanaimo too.
