Modified vs Cylinder bore

I've found that tighter chokes often given disappointing results with larger {00 and 000} buckshot, though they do well with smaller buckshot and birdshot.

The big pellets can take a beating going through a tight choke and you often end up with fliers or uneven patterns.

There are however some very tight chokes that are optimized with larger buckshot, but these seem to be of the extended length variety and sometimes include a wad retarder as well.

Another non-scientific study here, using my Cylinder Bore 14" 590A1.

10yds with HV 3", #2, about 15" spread. Damn those things kick hard...

10yds 2 3/4", 00 Buck about 9" spread.

Bonus points if you shoot the lamps. Man of the year if you put them back where they were afterwards and act like you have no idea how it happened.

I had old lamps to shoot, but they were brass so I passed. Can only do so much damage before the garbage man asks questions.

Range distance:
25m.

Gun:
Benelli M2 Field w/21" barrel.

Chokes:
Cylinder, Imp.Cyl, Modified, Imp.Mod and Full.

Ammunition:
Federal (ammo can) 2-3/4" 00-Buckshot (Shot = 9).

Shooting Stance:
Seated and a makeshift rest (i.e. range bag).

Point Of Aim:
Front bead (rib level) directly under the bullseye; this method was maintained for all chokes.
2 groups on each target. The "1" in marker represents the first group, nothing next to hole is from second group.

Enjoy! I think I like FULL-Choke :)

Good stuff G37, did you noticed any difference in the evenness of the patterns?

To me that's up there in importance with the pattern size.

Yeah... I got the impression that the improved modified was consistent. But then looking at images at home I liked the full. (00-buck)

At any rate I'd definitely go Modified over Cylinder if I had to choose between the two, but that's me. I don't think 25m is that far so I want as much shot in that area of paper as possible. Modified was noticeably tighter if thats what you are after.

...and at less than 20 feet everything (including cylinder) is fist size.

*I also shot some trap loads and the full pattern was centered perfectly. The IM was upper right which was weird. Based on that I'm sticking with full-choke for my shotgun.

This proved you really need to go out and see what works best.

I'm under the assumption that your patterns will be much wider with a short barrel, as I had about a 9" spread at 30ft with 00 Buck in my Cyl 14" 590. It's definitely effective at that distance.

I'll have a look, thanks. Ok just looked, wow. Is this new?

Not sure what ya mean by new. Irunguns have been around a bit. I didn't know you could get ammo this way either, tell another member told me. So I called them and they said yes. If your unsure they will explain the process. Its not hard its just like ordering from any website, however, it will take a month or so for the ammo to get into Canada, once here they will send ya an invoice for how much the taxes and shipping to your home will be.

I went with modified, because I had the option to do so.
It was as simple as that for me.

Most all of my tactical/combat style shotguns are open cylinder. So why not take advantage of the opportunity?

If I went cylinder I'd probably get it threaded for chokes (if possible.)

Otherwise go Modified and call it a day. Simple. Don't need to worry about chokes at all.

At the end of the day though it's all effective... I'd hate to get hit with a 8.38mm ball of lead regardless of distance or spread :p

Even birdshot as it was punching holes in the laminate table I was shooting, at 15ft.

Some of us have asked Irunguns if they can bring in a 14" Mod barrel for the 590, they say that they can - for those who bought the CB and want the other barrel. There is a thread in their section.

IMO...if I owned a 14" Cylinder bore for shooting slugs and thinking now about buying a Mod barrel (to get tighter patterns with shot) I would contact TacOrd(Casey) and ask him how effective the VCS system is on a 14".
I'd rather have one barrel that can perform than two and having to "swap" out barrels. The 20" VCS modified Cylinder bore 590A1 I posted earlier shoots tight patterns @ 25 yrds with 00buck and very accurate with slugs.
