Ok, I've decided to a Moisin Nagant.

I see them on P&S for about $250 and on Tradex for less. What are the main things that I should be aware of or to keep an eye out for? The gun would be for basic fun / plinking. I would to like to retain the option of someday putting a scope on it. Thank you.

From what I hear, Jean at P&S is a honest guy, If you ask him to pick as good one out for you, he will. Is that what you are asking? I sometimes miss the point on threads:p.

Thank you, that's pretty much what I'm asking...but also I would like to know if there are certain ones or countries of origin that I should avoid.

check out 7.62x54r.net, great reading and all you'd want to know (in my opinion) :)

FInd a great shooter and have fun; TradeEx or P&S. Hey, get one from each and do a comparo!

Thanks guys...I'm just getting into shooting again and am super excited. I think it'll be a great gun for me to start out with.

Hint...

Thank you, that's pretty much what I'm asking...but also I would like to know if there are certain ones or countries of origin that I should avoid.
YEs!
Avoid the Finn SA marked ones like the plague! They are the Frankensteins of the Mosin world and a collectors' nightmare!
And tell me where you found some so I can buy them to rid the world of these horrible ugly rifles...
;););)
PP. :D

Don't listen to PerversPépère, he wants all the Finns to be his and only his :p

Know that ammunition isn't the most common one in commercial stuff. Military surplus stuff can be found (maybe sporadically), when it's here, stock it up (as in a few crates), then you're good for quite some time.

Oh and, welcome back to shooting (what took you so long?) :)

Thanks everyone...great advice from all. I called Russel sports in Calgary and they didn't think that ammo availibiity would be much of a problem. The fellow told that they usually stock it..29.95 for 20, does that sound about right?
I don't know why it's taken so long to back into shooting...I guess life just got in the way.

One more quick one...I see a couple of nice looking Moisins in the exchange...what questions should I be asking when buying a rifle online?
