congrats on the shot and the moose...I was planning to use my 338 lapua for moose this year and go for a long range shot but in the end I used a 270 win and called him into around 70 yards, shot him behind the ear....lights out, no twitching. Maybe I'll take a deer with the lapua later in the season.

Is it ethical to be shooting moose from 800m away? I mean, if you're pulling misses and spine shots, wouldn't it be better to move forward?

Only water between me and the moose. Pretty hard to move forward. And no, I have absolutely no qualms about the ethics of my long range hunting.

I agree, too far to be sure. I think at some point it becomes an ego thing, and more about shooting than hunting. If I want to prove I can hit at those distance I put out a target.

You were way out of range. Spine shots and misses at close to 800m were "I wish" kind of shots....IMO you should restrain yourself to no more than 400m or whatever distance that you can hit 10" target 100% of the time. Hunted animals deserve better....

While others have their opinions, my opinion is that the ethical range to shoot a moose depends on the person behind the rifle. Your average hunter won't be able to make that shot. Someone that routinely practices/shoots at that range is another story. You have to do what you believe is ethical, not what others believe. Congratulations on the shooting.

Congrats on your moose, many would do a lot worse at 100 yards. I don't see a problem at all if you have the right equipment and practice.

Thanks for the congrats all. Took me 2 yrs of building rifles and loads and practice to make it all come together. Satisfying.

Took all the way to the 5th post this time!!!

Ethics are in the mind of the shooter.Mine are different than yours which are different from Jim's which are different from John's.

Congrats on getting your moose.

Congrats! Great Job.

I've seen people do worse within' 50 yards.

Sad to see "ethics" comments of this nature when you clearly did a great job on the hunt.
