Moose Gun

I grew up using my grandfathers 30-30 which between the two of us took many, many moose with using nothing more than 150gr round nose soft points. My eldest aunt uses a 270 with 140 gr hand loads and has taken more moose than anyone I've ever met. The first moose I ever seen down up close and helped skin was taken with my uncles 250-3000. Put a hole in a moose's lungs and he's done, pretty simple. Ill ask when they noticed the moose wearing Kevlar.

A very good gunsmith I know told me many years ago that there was more North American big game taken with a 30-30 than probably any other cartridge and that from what he could tell Moose hadn't gotten any tougher to kill since the introduction of that cartridge. Any standard legal calibre will do the job just fine with a properly placed shot. You sure don't need a howitzer for a Moose.

Here in Canada, I would think the .303 probably has a slight edge in the number of critters killed.

Years ago I read a quote/saying went something like "more game has been shot in the world with the 303 British than any other cartridge" but it went on to say "more game was wounded by the 303 than any other cartridge".

I've read the same quote but the 303 was replaced with the 30/30. Nothing wrong with the 303 for BG hunting. The shear number of them out there at on time could alone contribute to "more wounded game" along with the inexperienced shooters who own them.

I understand the premise, similar things have been said of the .30/30, but the "quote" was someone's " opinion." It would obviously not have been based on imperical evidence.

The biggest caliber that one can shoot without doing the flinch thing... 3030 would do at a reasonable range. 270 I would consider at the light end - but would do alright. 7mm-08 would do but with preferably heavier bullet. 308 and up. More so for a 30-06, 300 WSM or WM. And heavier larger calibers if one can handle them.
